So perpetual license then? At what point would it become obsolete?
Something to consider:
"Extended Support" from Microsoft for Office 2019 ends on 10/14/25 (Source: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/...ffice-2019). When Extended Support ends, the software will still work, but Microsoft will no longer provide security updates for it. Due to the lack of security updates, the general recommendation would be to not use it beyond that date.

open office gets updated less than libre. but open office tends to be more like ms office.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkZbHo1e3_4

here's a good video of switching from ms office to libreoffice.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0jeYe8iNWo

this is a video little more indepth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56Y_aCUeNqw

the closest office suit to ms office is freeoffice

I just upgraded my desktop to Imac now, what about the Apache Open Office? I know when I had Windows that's what I used & it was Free. I only think I used the Word though.

Does anyone know if there is a Free version of this on Imac?

Thanks!!
try freeoffice -https://www.freeoffice.com/en/
or only office - https://www.onlyoffice.com/download-desktop.aspx
or libre office - https://www.libreoffice.org/

Lies. Norton is one of the best antivirus/security products out there. Maybe you're thinking early 2000 Norton..

Just a reminder: if you use or need Outlook, it's not included.

Jesus, I still have Office 2013 and the support for it doesn't end till 4/11/2023. Guess I'll skip this minor upgrade.

Here in Los Angeles, tons of students are eligible for free Office 365 using their student logins. LAUSD students just download Office then use their student email (mymail.lausd.net) to activate the software, and it's good for multiple installs:

https://www.office.com/

Community college students also get it at LACCD:

https://www.laccd.edu/Departments...r-Free.pdf

It's probably millions of tax dollars going unused on this benefit!!

It's not the worst upgrade, I got it because I was rocking Office 2009.

Also, the support is different, mainstream for 2013 (so actual updates and the like) was only 4-ish years. You get a full 5 years of it for Office 2019, but you get less extended which is for bugs or vulnerabilities.

Obviously these are all based on first release date of the software, so keep that in mind.

$80 for something that can be found online for free? There are bunch of legal and free corporate licensed versions on the web

Depends on which applications and features you use/are used to using. For the most part, Microsoft Office will be a better experience than Libre/Open due to the massive feature set and development/support behind the whole suite. If you're already used to the workflow, it would be challenging to switch and compatibility would at least be annoying.

But Libre is free so might as well try it out and see if you like it. Microsoft Office Online and Google Docs are also free and worth trying out. Microsoft 365/Office is the only realistic option in enterprise settings though.

Here's a massive comparison:

ty for the info guys. yeah i shoulda mentioned im just a casual microsoft word and excel guy. mostly word

i like the look of libre looking at the videos the most, but all look nice

i still have microsoft office 2007 on my win 10 computer (which was originally a win 7 computer), still works but some minor quirks, but generally works.

unrelated, i remember using the old word 97 or whatever. i wonder if the microsoft company and the windows platform would have been anywhere near as successful if not for ms office. probably not. seemed like one of the main reasons to get win 95/98
