Isn't the built in windows defender good enough? I also use malwarebytes to supplement.
The detection rate of Defender is OK but the main drawback is the speed. Especially if you do anything with tons of small files like compiling.
NOD32 used to be the best AV for both speed and detection but I havent kept up to date if that is still true.

Support for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020 (same goes for defender). I am still Ok with Norton . . . but i was wondering what win 10 users are doing.
If you're interested in using Windows 10 and your hardware is compatible you could do the free upgrade, it still works. I did a 9 and a half year old laptop on Win 7 a few months ago and a mini PC on Win 8.1 last week.

You can download the Windows Media Creation Tool from https://www.microsoft.com/softwar.../windows10 (use a Win PC to visit site) and run it and 'Upgrade This PC' as long as your Win 7 is properly activated.

My first try with the laptop failed, had to install a version of .Net Framework I didn't have and retry.

Good idea to save a backup image of your Windows disk to another drive with something like Macrium Reflect (free) or something similar. Bootable USB method for best results usually.

Better off with Libre office or open office.
Free and works. Even Googles cloud based on works just as fine.
what are the pros/cons of libre vs open office if you dont mind

I just upgraded my desktop to Imac now, what about the Apache Open Office? I know when I had Windows that's what I used & it was Free. I only think I used the Word though.

Does anyone know if there is a Free version of this on Imac?

Thanks!!

Could you let us know some of the sellers you purchased the keys from?

rachas-68

Looks like those names are generated from the same system/group. Neither have any items for sale.

Sellers that offer Microsoft codes on eBay only keep their accounts open for a few days, and then start a new account/ seller name. This is either to avoid getting in trouble or because they got in trouble for selling enterprise licenses.

That said, I've bought a few over the years and they've all worked perfectly. Not much risk on a $2 purchase, even if the seller flakes out on you.

Yea, that omission kind of sucks.
But, according to a friend who works at MSFT, the overwhelmingly vast majority of casual home users and students never use Outlook. So, I get why they would have left it out from the "Home and Student" version.

Is this price worth jumping for Office? It's not a necessity at the moment. I see these ads above from Digital Maze or Software Giant that will send you Office Keys for a much cheaper price...has anyone tried these websites? Wondering if it's a scam or something.

I plan to upgrade, I am just in the middle of a project . . . using several software that i do not have the CD or the keys to. the upgrade will take time because i will have to find all the keys and if necessary software substitutes/upgrades.

Thank you for posting

Why not update to windows 10? Codes are on ebay for a few bucks. You can also use your windows 7 code for free and it will work.
I will, just in the middle of a project at the moment

I run malwarebytes and bitdefender, both of them free. They seem to work well and don't bog down my old computers in any way that I can tell.

Oh. I think when I had Windows XP and Vista, Kaspersky was pretty well regarded. There was also Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware, but I'm not sure how well those worked for real-time protection. I would just use those two when I suspected an infection.

As for Windows 10, I have always just used Windows Defender, or whatever it's called now. Haven't had a problem yet
ok, thank you

LibreOffice is newer/better. It split off from OpenOffice in 2010 (when Oracle bought Sun) and took most of OO's developers with it. Nobody trusted Oracle to be a good steward.
