Really? That's not good. I was thinking. If I got this for my wife's laptop and say I switch SSDs, will Microsoft deny me a transfer license?.

This 100%. That key that was generated would be invalidated in the future when Microsoft occasionally purges systems that use the unauthorized keys. But ultimately the decision is yours.
I've never had that happen. Worst case scenario, you have to spend another $3. By that time, they probably have a new version out. If you want to spend $80 on a limited product, be my guest.

Things didn't actually get expensive for retail price.

$10 is the Microsoft Home Use Programs (HUP) for participating employers (only).
I got 2013 and 2016 from previous employer email $10 each time. (than use the code to purchase from digital river and registered using personal email)
Also, Free online 365 when logging in using employee email.

I think now they only offer discount on 365 subscription.

Anyway, without HUP, I will just use other FREE office software available like Open Office or Ultra Office.
Don't like cloud based office which has restricted environment.

Interested in seeing where this is documented and what alternative AV products you recommend. I've been using Norton for years, no issues with system performance. Also use paid version of Malwarebytes.

FYI...

I just use Windows defender. The Tec guy (twit.tv) who I totally trust has stated... no virus program is perfect.... one catches xyz and the other catches abc... point is why install anything on your computer that will slow it down when there probably is no benefit.

Before windows defender I used Nod32.
I have been using Kaspersky for years

First, it started with it was free after rebates every year and it gave me less trouble than McAfee Pro which I used before that had CPU usage issue.
And it's the only antivirus that gave warning on last year's LaView website when it was hacked to steel customers' credit card info.
That's enough for me to stay with them, though I think they're trying to sell other services too hard and the FREE version now include fewer functions.

(before worrying about Russian get all your info, might be stop using all the PRC made cloud based smart devices or chips and apps in the phones)

AV. For most users, you can see the detection rate of ms av is well into the high 90s. On most common websites, it'll work fine.

If you're doing anything illegal, shady, etc, you'll want a better AV like Kaspersky.

That said, most alternatives are not made in America, only Norton as the big AV player left, so you'll have to balance potential off-shore data theft thru the foreign av vs national security.

...

Work may let you access to office far cheaper.

...

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/e...cts/office

Students may get office free, too.

...
EBay and elsewhere, cheap keys are not legally distributed, so don't be surprised like other buyers such offices suddenly stop working.

The EU region full boxed Office are legit, but legally need to be activated when you're in the EU country intended. A VPN takes care of that and it'll never expire.

Older, carded versions of Office are legit as well - Just make sure the scratch off areas are intact and you get the original cards mailed.

...

Microsoft Office online is free.
Microsoft Office phone apps are free.
Microsoft Office is The World's Standard.

If you choose to use anything else, YOU are fully responsible for the trouble that occurs when X alternative screws up the formatting, data, calculations, etc because it's Not Office.
(Yep, I've seen Word-alternative documents not open correctly in Word. Who are you to blame but yourself if $1000000 gets cut off and becomes $100000 for using X alternative?)

Honestly, Office Online and apps are as free as Google Docs online and apps, so absolutely No good reason not to use the standard for school and work.

...

I only wish I bought a 2016/2019 hup license before it was widely discontinued. (If the school/work opts for it, they can still offer it thru the above programs links.) 2013's interface is not optimized for high resolution screens, so some icons are tiny!

Like a junky, I need a 2016/2019 hup key, need a key...

That's the whole point. It's not unauthorized. You're downloading it directly from Microsoft. It's not cracked or compromised and it's completely safe.

Passing product key verification doesn't mean you have license to use it legally. You need license issued by Microsoft. eBay sellers can never give you genuine ones.
