Is this movie any good? I always hear about it and then tried to watch it the other day on prime. But it was super boring. I love sci fi and alien stuff but this just seemed like all the various kinds of old obduction stories all mashed together in scene after scene. And some with bad effects. is the whole movie just random things the whole time?
I think you're missing context. This was the FIRST realistic abduction/first contact movie. Any other ones all based themselves on this movie. The special effects were a decade ahead of their time. When this came out, it was brilliant and chilling.

Close encounters is one of my biggest movie disappointments. I had heard of it since I was a kid, and over the years it was built up in my head to be this can't-miss movie event that all movie lovers need to be a part of.
Maybe the movie seemed a lot more impressive when it was new, but i kept waiting for the movie to get interesting, and it never did.
The problem is that you have seen so many alien movies that came out after it that you are already familiar with its plot mechanics to the point that it is boring now.

The 1776 movie looks great. I'll get that! I already have Close Encounters of the Third Kind and love that movie! Thanks OP

1776 was the first thing I ever bought to watch on my 4K TV.

I paid $24.99 for the digital 4K version on Prime (where it was exclusive at the time), looool.

Picture quality is great (it's a transfer from the restoration they did for the last Blu-ray release) but no HDR, fyi.

1776 is fantastic movie and play! Well worth it! Mr. Feeney as John Adams.

Right?
I grew up on 1776 and am raising my kid on Hamilton. They are at once totally different and very similar.

Add Assassins to the mix (alas, no movie) and you've got a lot of wisdom and some great music.

It looks like 1776 is not the extended cut as available on the Blu-ray. It's a difference of two minutes, I believe. But at this price, I'm not complaining either.

I watched it for the first time on Prime last night in UHS and enjoyed it a lot. I mean the storyline isn't the greatest but the visual effects towards the end really was spectacular. It's nothing like the cartoonish CGI in some of the new movies and their rendition of the mothership is a work of art.

The visual effects really were ahead of its time and as usual John Williams also did an amazing job with the score.

I might have to go back and look at this again. The DVD version I have is meh at best for quality and I didn't really expect a higher resolution to do it any favors. Also, not from the film, but I've always loved this mini clip of two guys doing a mashup of a couple bars from the play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijDazuqwZJE

I just watch it with my son who's 13 and surprisingly he really liked it and wanted to know if there was a sequel. I watched it free on Prime but he wants to see the Director's Cut so I'm going to buy this.
