Is anyone else paranoid about losing out on rare coins? This deal alone had me lose 20 minutes of Googling tips on how to spot valuable coins. I think I'll just shove this 100lb bucket of coins back into the closet.
Yea, not worth it for $5

I once tested the machine by batching my coins. The first batch of $2 came up as zero. The rest of the batches were fine. Where did my $2 go? These machines steal!

Isn't there a fee for using Coinstar ?

Edited after answered below

Cashing in your loose change at Coinstar is easy. Just pour your coins into the kiosk and let us do the work. Choose one of our three convenient options: get cash, which has an 11.9% fee (fees may vary by location), select a NO FEE eGift Card, or make a donation to your favorite charity.

We have a jar of coins that I've never gotten to taking to the coinstar and I've sorted through them a couple times looking for anything special with no luck. I was mostly looking for coins with silver, not things like rare mint marks or strike errors.

The Coinstar machine at my local grocery store has been nice to me though. I always glance at the reject tray as I walk by and one time I found a 68 Kennedy half dollar. A couple years later in the same machine I found a 64 Roosevelt dime. Not necessarily valuable but fun to keep nonetheless.

Only if you redeem for cash. There was never any fee with redeeming for GC.

One of these days I'm going to do a deep dive on the pile. They say to separate into denominations so you can "get an eye" for those special marks. That's awesome you've found rare coins in the reject. Do people not hear it kick back coins? Maybe they don't really care.

I am not too concerned about this as my spouse is a coin collector and goes through all our change anyway. Yet some should be concerned. We returned some cans to get back the 5 cent deposit per can and received some silver dimes and quarters as pay out. Didn't even realize till we got home. Haven't seen any silver coins in years and years and wondered if because of coin shortage someone raided their piggy bank. The coins are not terribly valuable but worth more than a dime and quarter and fun to get.

before covid I would go around and get rolls of quarters or halfs to look through.

tons of quarters with mistakes, and sometimes youll find silver.
Sounds like a fun hobby.

what bS.
Not sure if you're saying its "BS" that this happens, or "BS that doesn't happen"?

Either way, it does happen. At any given moment, there's hundreds of scammers using bots to check the value of randomly generated gift card #s. The moment you "activate" a Amazon card, its now out there to be "checked". Its unlikely to happen to you per-se, but the longer you hold it, the more likely it is to get stolen

The first and only time I used coinstar was probably 10+ years ago. Didnt realize they had a fee, so got an Amazon giftcard. While seeing what to buy, I stumbled upon Rice Krispie Treat Cereal. I hadnt had that in years. I think I found a 4 pack and ate nothing but rice kirspie treats cereal for days. Very disappointed, I just checked and it seems they dont make that cereal anymore.
My cat's breath smells like cat food.
