Anyone bought a refurb paperwhite, how's the battery life? Surely they swap out the battery on these.

This deal takes me way back. I bought my first Kindle Keyboard via a refurbished deal from SD. I don't remember the seller, but I received a decent working Kindle that smelled like an ash tray. I went on to buy multiple used kindles after that. I love E-Ink screens and they last forever. If I didn't just get a new Paperwhite, I'd be all over this as well. I might get one anyway though.

The Kindle HDX tablets are great. A little old but they have way better screens than the new Fire HD tablets. I think the Fire HDX were meant to be iPad competition at the time until Amazon realized that the only way they can compete is on price. That is why they feel more premium and are also way snappier, at least compared to the last couple of Fire HD 7 and HD 8 tablets I had.

Only problem is you are stuck with a very old Fire OS Android version.

If you are adventurous enough you can install LineageOS on them to get a full Android 7.0 tablet.

Edit: Based on the product description the HDX 8.9 might be the 4th generation version which can actually be upgraded to Fire OS 5. That was a major upgrade from Fire OS 4 as far as I remember.
Ordered two 7hdx tablets. Thanks for the info.

Edit:

I cancelled my order since Vanced or Newpipe won't work with these old Fire tablets.

Does Amazon still spam ads on these things?
Yes. Very annoying on the kindle.

Thanks OP. Just a few days ago I revived my Gen 3 using a $15 battery from eBay.

Tried using the Kindle app for a few years but nothing beats reading the old fashioned way, and this is truly the best of both worlds.

Picked up a 1st Gen Paperwhite. For $20 it can't be beat. This one makes up the lack of a light on my Gen 3, although I don't know how big of a problem is screen smudges due to lack of physical buttons?

$20 removes those annoying ads. A bit high, but worth it when your kid and wife share a kindle and the special ads are romance novels with shirtless guys! Haha!!

Decided on the Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen. We have a 2019 Kindle and specs for the 1st gen are in some cases still better. Helpful comparison table: https://www.the-ebook-reader.com/...rison.html

Not much difference between latest paperwhite and 2016 model for my purposes (Adds support for audiobooks, flush front screen with frontlight, more storage, waterproof)

Assuming a new battery is a must... how's woot on warranty?

Also - it seems dark mode only supported on the latest versions - https://www.reddit.com/r/kindle/c...e_button/.

Any of the $20-30 e-readers better than a Nook Simple Touch?

Seems like a pretty good deal, but it's only a 90 day limited warranty from woot. I think I'll hold off and see what deals will be around for prime day in October. I don't want to end up having to replace the battery on the refurb.

I figure within 90 days I should definitely know if the battery is shot.

you can always do a trade in with 20-25% off for new ones in a while.. that's how I did last few times.

There ya go. Then use the trade in with whatever deal they have going, on prime day. It would be some effort though.
