I haven't tried this in years, so it's possible things have changed, but it used to be universal policy if you had a kindle device with ads and called support and asked for them to be removed, they'd always do it for free. I know I did it a few times with the kindle tablet video support. Worth a shot before thinking about paying.

$20 removes those annoying ads. A bit high, but worth it when your kid and wife share a kindle and the special ads are romance novels with shirtless guys! Haha!!
If you're annoyed by ads on the Kindle fires with "special offers", contact customer service. Say, "the special offers are making my Kindle unusable. Can you remove them?" And they will.

I'm in for a $20 paperwhite. Honestly, I love my fire hdx but not for reading and I've missed my older e-ink kindle. For $20 this seems like a no brainer to just get a straight reader.

Can anyone give an idea of what "good" condition is? I typically only buy very good or like new.

As far as battery life - I have a kindle (not paperwhite) from 2013 and the battery life seems fine. You can also keep it in airplane mode to make the battery last even longer (and to keep any library books til you're done reading them, if you need a bit longer.)

Not sure. But with a 30 day return policy I'll take a chance.

opted for the $20 kindle, there are a few nice features on the more expensive paperwhite but you can get that 2016 model on ebay for a few bucks more so i didnt see the point of getting this one. does anyone know its free return shipping?

Seriously? Unusable? The ads never, ever appear while you are reading a book. Never.

On another topic, I've traded in several Kindles in the past and the reason has always been that the device no longer holds a charge for very long. It is highly doubtful that the "refurb" process replaces the battery, so keep that in mind.

The Kindle HDX tablets are great. A little old but they have way better screens than the new Fire HD tablets. I think the Fire HDX were meant to be iPad competition at the time until Amazon realized that the only way they can compete is on price. That is why they feel more premium and are also way snappier, at least compared to the last couple of Fire HD 7 and HD 8 tablets I had.

Only problem is you are stuck with a very old Fire OS Android version.

If you are adventurous enough you can install LineageOS on them to get a full Android 7.0 tablet.

Edit: Based on the product description the HDX 8.9 might be the 4th generation version which can actually be upgraded to Fire OS 5. That was a major upgrade from Fire OS 4 as far as I remember.
Except that Gen4 can't be unlocked for lineage os. Gen3 8.9 hdx can upgrade you to at least android 7
