3200U ? no way, will not buy it for $199
Why are you even here then if heading says which CPU it has? I use motile with this CPU but upgraded ram and drive and can't complain about a single thing besides maybe dial channel ram configuration and maybe USB-C charging but that's me being really picky.

The deal above is $30 more and has 256 GB SSD. However, the SSD space is not of significance to me. Which is better Ryzen 3 3200U or Intel Core i3-1005G1 for browsing and school work?

The Intel is a better deal, but good luck finding one.

It's a decent deal considering the supply chain and options if you need it for time sensitive purposes

This is not a 450$ retail laptop nice try staples. It's normally 350 so this is 50$ off. I mean we haven't seen it below this number since before the pandemic broke out

I don't need a laptop now. When I did one of the questions I always had was could the RAM be upgraded and was there a spot for a second hard drive. This question you would think would be easily answered on the product page of the retailer or manufacturer. Many times it's not.

The trick I finally found is in your favorite search engine you put in the model number and the word crucial at the end. The Crucial site over the years have given me the most accurate info when it comes to upgrades.

So this is a dumb question but it's been a long time since I was computer shopping.. This deal clocks in at 2.5 ghz and the Intel one has a base speed of only 1.2 ghz? Did I miss a major shift in laptops where lower doesn't necessarily mean slower anymore?

All these Office Depot deals never seems to be available at any local stores even before or just when they go on sale. I wonder if this is bait and switch. I went to the stores several times and even call them before the weekly ads are posted. They never have these in store.

Clock speed doesn't mean much anymore unless you are comparing the same CPU at two different speeds. In my opinion, the only way to compare CPUs these days is to compare benchmark tests. An easy way to do that is to search on the specific CPU name. The 2nd or 3rd entry on google is almost always a site called cpubenchmark.net. It will give you a benchmark score, and the higher the better. The Ryzen 3 shows a score of 4104, and the I3 gives 5276, so the i3 is faster. Intel often does even better when comparing single core performance which is important for apps that only use a single core. Small differences such as these are probably not noticeable in day to day use. I would consider these two roughly equivalent, with the nod going to the Intel if they are priced the same or the Intel just a few dollars higher. Neither one of these CPUs is awful, and both are faster than 1st or 2nd generation i7s.

Tthe way to compare CPUs is to select them using the cpubenchmark compare feature, then look at:

- The Single Thread Rating - tends to be the better indicator of real life performance
- The overall CPU Mark - somewhat theoretical; real world applications don't use all the cores and threads to the max
- Lower TDP (Total Design Power) gives longer battery life. Newer laptop CPUs (the past couple years or so) have much lower TDP than older CPUs.

These are not hugely different, but the Intel is meaningfully better on speed and the same on the power usage.

Solid deal - I purchased one for my boyfriend and one for my dad. It was super easy to switch to regular Windows rather than Windows S-mode. It actually prompted us to "upgrade" when we tried to download Google Chrome.

My boyfriend needed something to browse the internet and for light gaming, so this was perfect. My dad only uses his laptop for banking and youtube, so this was an easy purchase at a great price point.
