Only if it had touch screen...
In the same boat. Family member "needs" a new laptop and this would fit the bill but for the lack of Touchscreen (that she will never use).

Sadly not available at this time. The Modern 14 with Ryzen 5 4500U will be costing nearly $700 and it comes with the shitty 45% NTSC Panel. MSI does not even provide any option for a higher quality Panel, unlike the Intel models where both 72% NTSC and 45% NTSC options are available.

This price is pretty solid if you are looking for a very Thin & Light Laptop for daily works with premium build quality and decent performance. This is full metal design, comes with a 300 nits 99% sRGB panel, good amount of storage and port selection and decent upgradability.

Also 3 years of Onsite Warranty, Office 365 1 year subscriptions are added bonus, considering the $500 price point.
I wish companies would stop undercutting on AMD counterpart laptops of their Intel versions. AMD is showing superior processing and graphics performance. It's about time, they start transitioning over to AMD. Intel has run the marketshare long enough and they're falling way behind.

This is a fault of AMD too. None of the Laptop companies and even AMD had not anticipated the success and did not arrange proper channels to provide enough supply. For example, there is a high chance that the SMT enabled Ryzen CPUS like Ryzen 5 4600U or Ryzen 7 4800U will not reach USA in this year because AMD is still having CPU shortage.

Currently HP is the only company in Consumer series which is offering both the 60% sRGB and 100% sRGB panel as an option in their HP Envy lineup with Envy 13 x360 coming with a decent 300 nits 99% sRGB panel by default. Ideapad Slim 7 is having a good display but only the 8GB model is available and that's too, unavailable most of the time.

The only option to get the ThinkPad T and X series Laptops or HP ProBook and EliteBook series Laptops which offer wide variety of Display Options. But they are costly, over $800 in most cases with the higher tier panel option.

This Amazon review for a similar model indicates that model had USB-C charging, but I haven't been able to find any other info yet

That is a completely different model, MSI Prestige series which is like their highest end Ultrabooks. I know that Prestige 14 and 15 both support Type-C Charging. I did not find any information if Modern series supports it or not.

Very knowledgeable post. Yes, supply shortage is the answer & has been for awhile. Wouldn't we all love to have a 4800u in our laptop? They are nowhere to be found unfortunately.

Regardless, it is back to good times with real competition to Intel these days.

If you guys can wait, 11th gen intel with Xe graphics are coming soon, and they're actually better than even current gen AMD CPU's and integrated Vegas. They also come with Thunderbolt 4, which will always have power over USB-C. This is still a good deal for a light laptop for light productivity tasks or multimedia consumption, but if you need a bit more power or don't need it right away, I'd wait for the next gen.
