As someone who works at a public library, I recommend stopping by sometime! You can order any book or other media and check them out for free when they come in; and most libraries have lifted fees and holds on accounts. In addition, there's Libby, OverDrive, and other online resources through libraries that are free. So I'd much rather support local libraries than Amazon, especially when it doesn't cost you a thing.

A better deal and strategy is to wait for the 3 month free membership, read a lot, take a break when it expires, wait for the 3 month free offer again.

+1 to this. I always try Overdrive for an e-book first before supporting Amazon

Is there much value here?

I had a free 3-month membership earlier this year, and thought the quality of available selections were quite poor.
Value in this case depends on the reader. How much one reads, and how picky one is. Many authors and series are average but some are fairly decent or even excellent (some series on KU are way better than many high profile traditional publisher pushed books). Also, many series have audiobook companions which make it even more worthwhile.

The advice I often give here on SD is to vary your sources. Kindle unlimited is great to pick up few months of the year (I usually subscribe to KU for 3-4 months of the year). Do your due diligence, read reviews and try to glean which books are worth reading. Read exclusively from KU for those few months and then stop. Then switch to other sources like your library or regular purchases etc.

I usually advise against paying for kindle unlimited for the entire year unless you read 1-2 books a week. The problem is there is tons of average stuff on kindle unlimited. If you only read from KU, you won't realize it initially, but eventually the quality of literature you are reading will go down. Reading a book needs high amount of time investment; it's not just the money (You watch a bad movie you waste 2 hours; you read a bad book, you waste 8 to 20 hrs).

Basically, to get the most out of KU, find books that you think are worth your time. Then come back to refresh your survey the following year. It's a great value if you read voraciously. For most it's a great service if consumed wisely and with restraint.

Can confirm this works by gifting to current Kindle Unlimited subscriber. I gifted to my wife and it pushed her subscription out 6 additional months. Thanks!

Can confirm this works perfectly. Enter your email address in the recipient field, choose payment type, confirm. Check your email and click the activation link and then confirm on the webpage. It'll then take you to your Kindle Unlimited subscription management page. If you have a current sub it'll show two lines for subs: One that is current and the expiration date, as well as the gift terms. I'm now paid through April 2021.

just worked for me also - I've done this a couple times. I'm good until March 2022 now.

Mostly unknown works, comics (Locke and Key), and the rare hidden gems. This service is mostly for the unknowns who self publish. For example, Lovecraft Country was on Kindle Unlimited up until the show came out and then it was moved off.

Also, if the removed books are still in your library you can still read them afterwards.

"If you purchased this membership as a gift, forward this email to the recipient.
Already a Kindle Unlimited member? This gift will be added to your existing membership."

Yeh but they have a very limited amount of books imo. Also ill be reading a series only to find out like book 7 and 8 arent carried at any of the libraries or something so i have to go on audible and either use a credit or hope for a deal. The Wheel of Time series is a good example. Why have the middle of the series unavailable?!?Thats like one of the most popular fantasy series! Also your limited to 6 holds and alot of holds can be over 12 weeks and i have a couple in the 20s. And you better finish them within 2 weeks or you gotta wait allover. It can be hard when i get 2 books that were on hold at once and they are both 30 hours long. I try to time them right but it still happens alot. I will admit libby has saved me alot of money though. If you use audible right though you can still save tons as well. I save credits for 2 for 1 sales and such and then theres alot of books if you buy the kindle book you can get the audiobook for 1.99 or 7.99 and it comes out to less than what a credit costs. Then theres the new plus catalog they just started with access to lots of popular audiobooks for free.

I purchased two and added both to my account without issue.

I went with the free paper, kindle, hoopla membership at the county library rather than paying an unscrupulous corporation for the privilege to read and then become a marketing tool.
