Bought 920+ and 16GB RAM for it, thanks! Any recommendations on M.2 cache drives?
I use my 920+ with a single WD Black SN750. You can get it for about $63 on SD from time to time. Been running it for 2-3 months now - no issues. Cache usage is at 26% and 87% hit rate (monthly average).

For those relying on Amazon cloud with Synology NAS, they are parting ways. No more data backup after Nov1, 2020

Got the Synology 5 Bay NAS DiskStation DS1520+ for $650... is that worth $200 more for the newer hardware? I have a feeling it's not worth it and the DS920+ is a better buy.

You can add the DX517 expansion unit to this for 9 total bays. That isn't my biggest issue with this NAS. My big issue is the lack of faster ethernet or at least an expansion slot for the faster ethernet card. Unfortunately, none of the units with that feature seem to be on sale. For this price, I'll probably live with that limitation.
This and the 918+ has 2 GigE ports. You can either connect them to separate networks (if you have that sort of network segmentation) or you can port channel/lag them with the correct switch configuration.

If you're mad about not having 10G interfaces, I'm sure you're using a network switch that will support port-channels.

I'm simply running 2 Seagate Ironwolf 10TB drives in mine right now. Raid 10.

Yes, I can do that, but I'd prefer not to. 1 Gb is fine for me "for now," but I'd like a better option down the road. I just wish it had the expansion slot to give me the 10 Gb option down the road. From my quick glance, the only consumer-level models from Synology with that slot are the 1618+ and the 1819+. I think maybe I'll sit this one out and see what Black Friday has to offer.

Depends on your use case. Are you using all 5 bays? If so, you'd need to get one of the expansion units for the 920+. Are you looking at expanding to 15 drives in all? Or would future expansion be limited to no more than 9 total?

Are you using Link Aggregation/failover on the 1520 over two networks (which would require 4 total ports)?

Other than having two eSATA ports and 4 GigE on the 1520+ vs the 920+ with the single eSATA port and 2 GigE everything else is essentially the same. Even purchasing the difference in RAM (8gb pre-installed in the 1520 vs 4gb in the 920) you're still looking at a decent delta.

I personally read the reviews for people going over the 8GB recommendation (and what's technically supported by the celeron chip) and I just didn't feel comfortable doing that.

I found 4GB of Synology DD4 2666 Ram on eBay for < $30.

The guy who sold it just removed it from his other bigger Nas to make room for more.

The same stick was ~$100 on Amazon.

I've rarely seen the high-end consumer DiskStations on sale (above the 9xx series). If you truly just want a NAS and you don't want to run a slew of VMs/Dockers/Plex on it, I'd consider one of the older rackmount units if you'd like a cheaper alternative that will give you 10G flexibility in the future.

The one thing you should be careful of on the Rackstations is the lack of redundant power supplies on some of the models. But, if it's "just" for home usage... that shouldn't be a huge deal.

I have a 2-bay Synology NAS with 8 TB and 8 TB with RAID. If I get this 4-bay NAS and two new 12 TB drives, can I convert to a (12+8) and (12+8) RAID? If so, can I transfer the data to the new set up without losing it? Thanks!

Thanks, that is a good suggestion and I'll look into those as well.
