Unless you need a NAS right this minute, wait for a unit with 2.5/5Gbps support and ideally with a Ryzen embedded that's 3+ times faster than this 5 year old Atom CPU masquerading as a Celeron.

Is this an overkill for home use with few containerized apps running? I am using usb and internal hard drives for data storage..

It's tempting, but if you already own a DS918+ with extra RAM, it isn't worth the upgrade cost. (They switched to DDR4.)

No. This is what its intended purpose is. I've got my DS918+ running 6 containers, Plex, and some other stuff.

Yeah, the 1819+ was the one I was looking at but I was afraid the 1821+ might be announced soon (like next month) so was holding off, though in all likelihood the upgrade to the 1821+ would be minor at best.
the incremental upgrades for Synology's 8-bay small business models (like the 1819+) are pitiful at best. it's one of the reasons why i stuck with QNAP for so long, but the string of firmware issues and security gaps with QTS pushed me finally to Synology

the 1819+ is solid, it just is not for any sort of transcoding or multimedia delivering with exception of direct play (which is what i do, direct play)

Really good deal if you are in the market. Bought this when it came out for my first NAS and I am very pleased with it. Its running Plex, PiHole, and a few other containers for me with no issues.

I have an older DS413j with 4 WD red drives. I have been fairly disappointed with its performance from within the web app (lacking memory and CPU horsepower). The resources are always pegged when I am logged in.

Given it has been 7+ years and it is FINALLY on sale (when has it really ever been?) is it worth a refresh? This thing stores a lot of my media in a RAID 5 configuration.

I have a 2-bay Synology NAS with 8 TB and 8 TB with RAID. If I get this 4-bay NAS and two new 12 TB drives, can I convert to a (12+8) and (12+8) RAID? If so, can I transfer the data to the new set up without losing it? Thanks!
It depends on your current setup. If the current NAS is truly RAID, I don't think it'll be as easy as just "throwing" the old drives in to the new unit unless you want to use 2 different volumes (8+8 "old" and 12+12 "new").

What many people do is "demote" their old NAS to an offsite backup unit at a friend's or relative's house. Do a full backup while they are on the same network, then just do incremental backups over the internet.

You could do a big shuffle of drives and make it work with the 12+12+8+8. Let us know additional details and maybe we can point you in the right direction. Or hit up /r/synology.

The PiHole you can run and then filter out ads for the whole home network right? That's what I'm interested in doing.

Great deal, especially if you can combine it with the other amazon prime day promos.

For example,

$440
- $10 whole foods credit
- $10 small business credit
- $10 gift card bonus
--------------------------------------
$410 before tax.

if you have an amazon prime card, that's another 5% off that. solid deal for a 2020 model.

Just so that I understand. If all of my media is in 4K, then transcoding only comes into play when streaming to a device that outputs at 1080p, right? If I go 4k media to 4k TV, then no issue?

I have been using Plex for a very long time and I've honestly never streamed to more than a single device (my living room TV), but it's possible that in the future I stream to more as my kids get older. I'd like to buy something like this and kind of set it and forget it.

I was interested in the Ryzen until I dug in to it running Plex and the Plex moderators pretty much saying "yeah, that's nice, but we still have enough problems with Intel's QSV on NAS"

link to reference [plex.tv]

Although if you're not running Plex and all that, I agree that the Ryzen platform will likely be beefier than the Intel J series... just know your intended purpose. I specifically bought a NAS to have it store a bunch of stuff, run docker and Plex well. The 918+ (and this 920+) does it well.

That is correct. PiHole is so low power that it's intended to run on a Raspberry Pi. I have an RPi running as my primary DNS server with PiHole and then I'm running PiHole in a Docker container as secondary DNS server on my Synology.

No reason to have one point of failure in the network.

If you're buying this just to run PiHole, it really is overkill.

Crossposted from another forum: Does anyone use this as for a headless cloud backup? I'd love to hear what you use. I'm a photographer, and currently I backup to Crashplan business (but plan on cancelling that) and I also backup my photos to amazon photos (bc it's free). I have something in the range of 11tb to backup, so I'm not sure how feasible it is to switch over to a new service, but I'd be interested if anyone uses the Synology cloud service, Backblaze, or Amazon Glacier (perhaps I'd use a Snowball or Amazon would let me port over the terrabyts of photos I already have with them into Glacier) using the Synology NAS.

Currently:
-Macbook pro holds current photos in process and is backed up over wifi to time machine backup. Theoretically also backed up over cloud to Crashplan, but their incoming upload speed is so slow it never catches up. RAW Photos are pushed to backed up via Amazon Photos in the cloud immediately after moving from camera.
-After processing, photos are moved to 10tb Easystore HD for storage, which I clone every couple weeks to another 10tb Easystore HD. Theoretically anything on those has already been backed up to Amazon Photos cloud, and should have been backed up in Crashplan but probably not. However, since they are not a NAS photos are not actively being backed up.

My Hope:
- Macbook pro backup plan continues.
- Synology storage/backup plan allows improved storage (instead of a single 10tb drive, I can increase the storage capacity by the multiple bays), physical backup (or whatever we call RAID/SHR drive protection), and also have 24/7 backup via a headless backup to a cloud, e.g. Amazon Glacier, etc.

And if anyone wants to tell me a better way I would love to know Wink

Thanks so much!
