Great speakers, particularly for the price.

I have these and Elac B5s at home, and while the B5s sound clearly better, the Sony Core speakers sound really good for about half the price.

For those who have the bookshelf or center speakers (tower excluded), what are your cross over frequencies? Can they be set at 80hz?

Would those bookshelf speakers need an amp if I used them for my desktop?

Any comments on the sub? Seems to have mixed reviews on Amazon.

These are unpowered. You need an amp.

So I'm new to Home Theater and have been doing some research for a budget setup. How do these (540 full set with 2 front towers) compare to the Jamb S package from adorama for 599 that includes the s809, s83 center, s801 and the j10 sub 300w?

Are these the speakers that people were raving about saying that they were beating $500 speakers

Is the subwoofer any good? Had a Polk Audio one that crapped out on me.

I've heard these recommended over the Klipsh Jamo S a lot in the past here and elsewhere, with all speakers getting good reviews except for the powered sub. I just personally bit the bullet on a full set and am going to get a different powered sub.

Thanks for the input. I'm getting the Sony str-dn1080 and will be a good pair with this set up. I have a gift card and Amazon credit, so thinking I might bite the bullet and get the whole setup. I kind of get OCD when mixing up brands.. edit: just looked it up and its only 115w... that kinda socks, would love for it to be at east 300w

I don't have the center but I own the bookshelves, running them at 80hz and they are fine there.

Even for the towers, I wouldn't set them that much lower... maybe 70hz or so for the towers... they aren't the same as full-size towers more like mini-towers.

Yeah, well, they really aren't beating $500 speakers, but they are competitive with higher priced speakers.

For home theater use, I prefer the Cores over Elac B6s. Although without a sub I'd go with the Elacs. KefQ100s get the edge over the Cores, but they are surprisingly close.

I can say that at this price range these are the best speakers I know of. Their big weaknesses are that they don't do so great at really high volumes and they badly need a subwoofer. Even the Core towers require a sub.

This is a great deal because its returnable to Amazon if you don't like it.

I listened to the Sony bookshelf speakers at Bestbuy and it sounded terrible. Obviously the conditions at BB aren't the same as inside your own house, so its best to do a proper A/B comparison at your listening location to make the correct decision.

Here you can just grab it for $73 and if you dont like it its an easy return.

The Polk Audio Monitor 40 is $135 at Amazon as a prime deal, can get both and do a A/B comparison if they both in the price range, although then you're already at the same price range as the Infinity Reference line so dunno if its an apt comparison.
