Trying to decide if I should make a change here or not. What do you think?

I've been with Verizon 25 years, FWIW. I'm in my 50s, so Verizon offered me a 55+ loyalty plan that seems pretty good so far and pried me away from my grandfathered unlimited plan. Unlimited talk and text, unlimited data and I'm paying about $58/mo with autopay. Doesn't support 5G, but not sure if I actually need that sort of speed.

I have an iPhone 8+ cosmetically in mint condition with 256gb memory. It's a decent phone, but has gotten a bit glitchy, periodically freezing for brief periods. There was a recall on iPhone 8 for the exact same behavior, but Apple insists it doesn't apply to the 8+. I don't think I believe them. I'm not sure if the phone has an issue or it's because I have a huge amount of music, photos and such and that might be slowing it down. Plenty of unused memory let though and battery at 75%.

Interested in an iPhone 12, but so far, looks like Verizon isn't offering much. Plus, if I did take them up on their so far mediocre offers, I'd have to spend about $20-$30/mo more, just for the qualifying plan.

So here are my options:

A. Keep what I have and deal with it. Maybe they'll offer something better later.

B. Move up to one of Verizon's (so far) mediocre offers.

C. Switch to a new carrier and get a better deal on a 12. So far, AT&T looks to have the best offers on a trade-up with an 8+. I hate to switch carriers, but sometimes it can be a good option.

Any thoughts?

Check out what your monthly service total will be to start with. If that cost doesn't seem reasonable to you then staying with Verizon is probably a good idea.

Bill credits suck,plus you can't unlock for 30 months.
Yes. Verizon phone is native unlocked.
Plus 30 months means you will be bound to this phone for another 3 years.

So I owe about $200 on my XS (256gb), thoughts on if its worth paying off the remaining amount and upgrading to a Pro model?

I feel like this is the best opportunity to upgrade because the value of this XS crashed hard.

I agree but I can't assure myself that I qualify due to owing a few more months on the b1g1 xs from 2 years back. The online rep claims I qualify for the 800. Just waiting for them to try to bill me the balance after I upgrade, or remove credits.

Yea I think where I benefit here is that I just flat out purchased mine (using the installment plan) without any other bonus offer. So as long as I pay off my device I'm sure that I would qualify here.

I wouldn't be too shocked if they let you pay off any remaining balance and upgrade. Would do it in-store if possible though.

I read every post in this thread, but still have a question .

Can you trade in your old phone at an At&t store? As in they will tell you the value right away? The horror stories of trading in via mail are a strong detractor.
Found it, you can drop off at an AT&T store. Per the terms and conditions on the apple.com website: Must trade in eligible smartphone in good condition at a participating AT&T location within 30 days from activation of new phone. Trad

Thank you! Repped. I confirmed this via chat too but I feel way better when I see it in the terms Smilie unless apple.com is off

I hope it's not a sh*t show tomorrow with preorders. I want to see in writing what the cost breakdown is monthly for various models above the $0 threshold (ie - iPhone 12 at 128 GB vs iPhone 12 Pro 128 GB). My rough calculation is:

General bill credit
$800/30 = $26.67/mo

iPhone 12 128 GB
Price = $849
$849/30 = $28.30
$28.30-$26.67 = $1.63/mo

iPhone 12 Pro 128 GB
Price = $999
$999/30 = $33.33
$33.33-$26.67 = $6.63/mo

And of course in the sunny land of CA, we have to pay tax upfront. I didn't include that here but it's fine.

On paper, that's $5 more per month for an extra camera lens and some small spec bumps. $150 over 2 1/2 years. I like the royal blue in the 12 over the pacific blue in the 12 Pro. So I think I'm going to get the 12 and save the $5 a month to go towards some accessories and offset the cost for AppleCare+ (which I'm paying $10/mo for on my XS Max).

Where? I have an Xs 64gb and it's only going for $400-$500 on Reddit. I get $800 here for it.
