There was a court case some years back that basically redefined tax collection for out of state purchases. No idea what the details of all that was but basically the court case redefined merchants (like ebay) have to collect taxes for your state on your behalf and send that money to that state. It used to be an honor system were the consumers were supposed to report it and pay the tax, but now they got rid of the middle man since (not surprising) few people did or even knew about it.
