I bought this when the deal first went live and took it to Colorado on a weekend trip. Honestly it's a great bag for 60 bucks. Just go into it with the correct expectations. First, the side that holds the laptop you can't really use anything but very small items in the storage pockets it's just too tight. Now the other side seems to hold as much as any other carry-on we have except for the Tumi. Probably the worst negative is the shiny black front portion of the carry-on. It is a scratch magnet and there is nothing you can do to stop it other than keep it covered and not use it. Now for the good stuff. It's one of the best made carry-on's I have used. I cannot see how you wouldn't be happy with the quality, especially for 60 bucks. Handle is great! Nice and sturdy, plus the wheels roll smooth. I really wanted the nomatic pro carry on, but the pro was 529 I believe and I just didn't want to spend that much. In synopsis, for $60 it's a solid buy. Oh btw I have seen people commenting it might be a little on the big side, but when I loaded it into the top bin along side other passengers carry-ons it actually appeared small so I'm not sure what the fuss is all about.

i can see why they're clearancing these. this is 1" larger than carry on size. why would they make a case like that?
So is this even possible to take as carryon? Maybe that's why it's on sale?

I've had this same one for like 5 years, several trips overseas. It is hard, it does protect your laptop very well. I can fit a lot in it. It just on the heavier side. But very well built, I would buy it again at that price since I paid $300, but mine still looks good after this long. I recommend it 100%.
So it's allowed as a carryon despite being one inch extra than allowed?

I have always used it as a carry on, on flights to Europe and Asia, on United, delta, Lufthansa, and even flights within Europe with easyjet, never had an issue

This is a great deal! I bought mine in 2013 at 50% off ($150.00) and it has gone through many trips. Be mindful when doing international trips with this luggage as it is not very light to begin with. I had to move some of the items from this luggage to my backpack to get it under 7lbs limit. Other than that, I've been happy with it. And yes, the hardshell gets scratched easily. But I view it as travel scar Smilie
They checked your carry on's weight?

A number of Asian carriers do that. Eva Air and ANA both did that to this carry on. Domestically, I haven't encountered this issue.

The "softshell"/cloth version of this is on sale, but more expensive than this, any reason why? This seems to be the better version.

Yep, I ended up getting that version. Since it offers a front zipper compartment in replacement of the glossy finish of the hard shell version. Not to mention I don't have to worry about it getting as scratched easily.

So just an extra zipper compartment? I'm not too worried about getting scratches as long as it protects the laptop inside, which I assume the hard shell version would do a better job at.

I have never ever ever EVER been checked on a domestic flight to see if my visibly-carry-on sized bag was EXACTLY carry-on size.

Hell, even internationally, that has almost never happened, save for Japan who is a total stickler for rules, and super cheap budget airlines that nickel and dime you for everything like RyanAir/EasyJet/the-now-defunct-WowAir

So I don't think that's really a concern.
