I find Freetime perfect for our 1st grader and preschooler. We paid $20 for a family subscription (upto 4 kids) on Prime Day and there are a ton of free apps, games, books, etc. without ANY ads. My biggest complaint about free kids learning apps and games from the Play Store is that they are all crippled and full of ads for paid upgrades.
We got the 8" "plus" version with 3GB RAM and wireless charging for $74.99 (- $10 Whole Foods credit) on Prime Day.
My daughter's iPad mini stopped charging and didn't want to drop $400 on a new one, so grabbed this for $45 (after trade in) on Prime day. Battery doesn't hold up great in standby, but other than that she doesn't have any complaints.
Now I just need to upgrade my pc...

The 64gb version still has only 2gb of ram and costs $120. If you want a cheap tablet to have lying around, this is a good option combined with the Fire Toolbox software from XDA, which can remove ads, do some debloat, add Google play store and a number of other things. If you don't want to use the toolbox, you can just ask Amazon cs to remove ads and they will for free.
If you want a tablet for more regular use, I'd look at more powerful options, but this is well known as a really good bang for buck option unless you want to deep dive into Chinese imports (if you do, I recommend the Alldocube iplay 20, but that's a whole other category).
It's been ages since I've researched tablets, and have been using Pixel phones. There was a phase when I'd only buy lesser known phones and tablets that were popular on XDA.
On a side note, if anyone picks one in-store, can you confirm whether its the special offer version or not. I would cancel my order with Amazon if its the non-special offer version. I think its unlikely but who knows. The reviews say its the special offer version but maybe in-store you can cherry pick.
I stopped using my 2017 after I bought the 8+, which was much faster (still a bit laggy). I would trade the HD 10 2019 in, but it depends on what BB will offer.

YES, BUT, I highly recommend (what many posts are talking about) installing XDA AMAZON TOOL BOX on a PC... you plug the tablet into the pc run the software and go through the options. THIS will disable amazon apps (the ones you choose), eliminate the fire launcher and replace it with NOVA LAUNCHER. Basically it brings the tablet very close to stock android, it eliminates the adds, most people find the tablet runs better.
My daughter is in 2nd grade and she just got into Roblox. She love her Fire HD tablet.
