If you're only going to cut plywood this saw will work but I'd definitely suggest getting the 18V version of products if you're buying for the long haul or expect to buy more makita.

I have this saw. Great for small and thin applications. It's lite weight and easy to handle. Keep in mind the 12v battery cannot be charged with your 18v kits so you will need this separate charger for this battery versus if you have other makita tools (most of which use the 18v batteries). Nice case keeps all that together though so it's no big hassle to me.

Just bought this saw for $129.99 + tax on the 29th of September. Called and tried to get a price match for the $30 difference, said it was out of stock and could not do it.
Think I'll take it back anyhow, the saw has very little power and the only thing I saw a need for was removing kitchen base cabinet bottom that had water damage and needed to be repaired.

I also have this saw. It is a good little saw when a full size saw is to much saw. Surprisingly, it has decent power.

I don't think an 18V version of this saw exists.

That's a 6-1/2" blade. Not comparable.

Yeah it's not like for like obviously but I believe there's a smaller circ saw that's 18V for the same purpose. I guess my point is - if you want to pigeon hole yourself to 12v that's your prerogative but the general line of Makita is moving towards 18V and the 12V stuff always goes on sale before they introduce the new upgraded product with 18V.

As someone who owns a lot of Makita tools, I think you're wrong. They don't clearance out 12V to introduce an 18V version. They're different lines for different audiences. I want a mini circular saw. If I want it in Makita, this is my only option. If you have a source telling me they'll be releasing an 18V version, I'd gladly admit I'm wrong.

There won't be a source until they release it. Why would they tell you right now when they want to get rid of the 12V stock? That makes no sense. It's a pattern for them over the last 2 years. I have all makita too. Just switched out my blower because they moved it from 12v to 18v. Everything's goin LXT. Even small items like work lights etc. I guess we agree to disagree! I just wouldn't advise anyone getting into makita to buy anything 12V. I have a few leftover 12V items and trying to replace them ASAP so I can get rid of having multiple batteries/chargers all over the place.

If this was brushless and could cut a 2x4, it'd be worth another $30-40... Would like to see an 18V 4.5" saw kit with 1 4.0 or 5.0ah, or 2 2.0ah. brushless, for around $200. Dewalt is gonna clean up here.

FYI, the Dewalt 20V 4 1/2 inch saw is one sale in HD for $99 which cuts 2x4 and is a better deal to me.
