I really wish this was available in stores, so I could check the squareness/straightness of each item before choosing the best one to buy.
Has this really been a problem?

This is 3/16 aluminum, with a rare feel of quality - an outlier that somehow remained untouched by the corporate bean-counters.

I have seen these be off as much as 1/16" - 1/8" off the shelf. For many people this is the only square they have and it is used square up your table saw fence, miter saw, etc. So while 1/16" is not much over 6 inches, it can get amplified when using it on something like a table saw or miter saw fence that is 2' - 3' long. It can get frustrating when you project is not lining up.

So yes my point is the original poster who said he would rather buy one in store to make sure it was square was not sarcasm. Some people pay hundreds of dollars for accuracy. Getting one of these as accurate as possible is important so you can limit your aggravation on future years of projects to come.
Received my set today and checked with a Woodpeckers precision 12"x8" woodworking square against light (I suppose the woodpecker's one is close enough to a true square) . Visual inspection confirmed that for my set, the 7" Milwaukee is true but the 4-1/2" is off (suprising!). Thus, the bright side is that at least I got one good unit, which has a good appearance. I will give 4-1/2" one to kids for their school work/project.

FYI: I ordered my set online because website showed online only. Later I found there are plenty of these red sets in local stores. Now it's out of stock online but stores still carrry them.

Good to hear. If I see them in store I might get one. I still have and use my 20 year old Stanly one I used to build house with that has seen better days.

I will buy just about any tool stamped "made in the USA" or "forged in the USA." So this will be an easy sell if I make it into the store in the next couple days. I never really thought about the square being out of square on a $15-$20+ tool, but I learned something new there.

Or you could buy the original [amazon.com], that's Made in the USA, for $2 more...

The Milwaukees are US made as well and much nicer, but the Swanson set you linked is bigger.

Picked mine up today and I must say, well appears made. However, some of the edges are very sharp. I might need to use some emory paper to prevent slicing a finger! Anyone find the same? Do the Swanson's have sharp edges?
