Can this be used for saurkraut or does that have to have glass/ceramic?

I suppose you could, though the narrower opening might make getting it out more difficult.
According to this site PET is OK:

I'd think I'd want to just use a food grade pail with lid that you can get pretty cheap. Firehouse subs sells theirs that had been used for pickles for 4 or 5 dollars with the lid, I believe the proceeds go to charity. That plastic sure holds on to the pickle smell!

Thanks for the info. Will have to check into firehouse subs. Been using mason jars and if you didn't hear there's a big shortage of them. Wink

Dont use plastic, they will eventually crack and break. The $20 youre saving now will be all over the floor. Buy glass and use a cargo strap to carry it.
