There seems to be some confusion and misinformation about WiFi 6 in this thread.

WiFi 6 (802.11ax) operates on both the 2.4GHz & 5GHz channels and is essentially a small upgrade to WiFi 5 (802.11ac). WiFi 6 IS NOT 6GHz, that will be WiFi 6E (although some WiFi 6 routers might be upgradable to WiFi 6e in the future via firmware updates)

Lower frequencies (2.4GHz) provide better wall penetration and range while higher frequencies (5GHz+) provide higher speeds.

For those of you who want to improve your connection quality/range, buy a mesh system. This router will not really improve your connection quality/range (albeit WiFi 6 does increase the 2.4GHz band performance which has good range/wall penetration so you could connect to your 2.4GHz band). There are WiFi 6 mesh systems that take advantage of of the WiFi 6 improvements, or Asus routers w/ AiMesh can double as a mesh network node as well.

WiFi 6 is more geared towards people who have a lot of wirelessly connected devices on their network such as IoT/smart home devices, due to it's improvements like OFDMA and handling a lot of connections efficiently.

tldr:

Buy a WiFi 6 router if you already have a strong connection quality around your home and you want to improve wireless speeds OR if you have a lot of wirelessly connected devices.

Buy a mesh system If you want to improve your connection quality or range around your house.
Wrong.

It is about the band they use (2.4ghz vs 5 ghz). WiFi6 can actually penetrate more than WiFi5 because WiFi6 also supports 2.4ghz. The downside of using 2.4ghz is the oversaturation or dirty air. Also, there are only fewer channels to bond. 5ghz on the other hand is wider. So many available channels to use and to bond. The WiFi6E will make this even better due to more channels being introduced. The downside of 5ghz of course is that it can't penetrate much as the 2.4ghz. However, the penetration and distance difference only matters if you are in an isolated place where 2.4ghz is clean. If you live in a dense area like an apartment, forget about 2.4ghz. You will benefit more on the cleaner Signal to Noise ratio of the 5ghz even through walls.

Also, WiFi6 is better suited for high dense area than WiFi5. I can go on technical on this but in short, WiFi6 is better.

Reminder that Netgear is trash and nobody should be buying this crap for any reason ever.
Then please tell us what one should buy. I have no issue with someone providing their opinion, but if you do at least provide more insight into it.

Why the hell should I? some people might *like* routers that drop connections constantly and crap out after not even a year and want to deal with their absolutely terrible excuse of a manufacturer's warranty.
wow someone's hurt....

netgear customer support is terrible i'll give you that. But if you know what you're doing, they can be excellent products. I have a nighthawk x8 for the last 2.5 years and have had no issues. Just make sure you get the best model you can afford and purchase the store's buyer protection plan if you're worried. Some units can be lemons and do need to be returned.

can someone care to answer this? I have a similar Netgear router and modem. Recently I moved to a new place where the speed is upto 600 mbps as per the plan, but with the netgear router modem combo, I get only 40 MBPS. so was looking to get a new one.

Any inputs will be appreciated.

Understood that it needs modem also. do you know of any decent modem that pairs well with the router. Bestbuy has netgear 16*4 docsis 3.0 for 60.

Any suggestions

Hard to go wrong with Costco, even though their return policy is a tad more reasonable than the "we'll take anything back that you ever bought regardless of how you've abused it" policy of the past.

While I'm not sure why others are criticizing Netgear, the online consensus seems to be that Netgear's firmware updates are terrible, breaking otherwise working routers. I've had a couple Netgear routers stop working properly after firmware updates, so I tend to update firmware infrequently.

nothing, just simple plain user error.
I don't believe in user error for such a simple device such as a router. What can the user mess up?

have to choose from this one or AX5200 from WorstBuy, finally decided to go with Costoco, will not achieve 5300bps or 4300bps either way
This is a theoretical maximum - only achievable with another 3-band device. Do you have AX client?

I agree that NG's model of trying to sell on extra services (i.e. nighthawk security) and stupid tiered warranty is bad. However, the device is good- there's not much reputable competition left around.

I'm currently still using a Linksys e3200 I've had for years. I have a 200mbps plan but I get about 30 on 2.4ghz and about 100 on 5ghz....although I never lose connectivity or have issues much.....is this a good replacement for it? I do game quite a bit and also work from home currently. Router is placed downstairs while I work upstairs. Home Is about 2700 sq ft but router is vertical downstairs. So the room I work in is upstairs but more directly above it?
IMHO, don't upgrade, no reason for it if you are getting stable 5GHz and 100MBps over it. To take advantage of AX your client needs to be AX, and I bet yours are not. This would NOT improve coverage, especially on 2.4GHz. You MAY have advantage with this if you have an AX repeater/extender, but otherwise, keep your working Linksys.

Choose modem based on your ISP/Plan: some require DOCSIS3.1. Otherwise, as connection is with Ethernet - doesn't matter, there's no compatibility issues. Make sure to configure correctly (disable modem's routing functions) and use Gigabit (CAT6) certified cable between .modem and router if your plan is above 100MBps or above.

Besides the different in theoretical max speed, is there any other major difference between this one and BestBuy AX5200 one ?
