I have a Netgear R7000 that has been solid for years, this one does not look like its replacement.
One of the few good netgear..

I have the same router as you. I think I will wait until I see a newer Asus AX go on sale for Black Friday. I hear iffy reviews of Netgear and their firmware updates.
Smart Move. Asus isn't perfect but they really get the job done and when they stick they will last 5 or more years with NO problems. As with all brands they have their share of bad QC units.

My warning lights go off when you can't even find the item on the manufacturer's website. Probably a holiday special model just for Best Buy. They'll blow trough this sku and it'll never be seen again. Might not bode well for long-term firmware support.
It does have a product page on their website (https://www.netgear.com/home/prod...rax48.aspx), but you're right that firmware support may be limited if not enough people buy this model.

I think that RAX48 could just be the sku that is being phased out into RAX50. Any website selling either of them calls them both Nightawk ax5400. It's only when you look at the fine print that you see the model number is not the same. Maybe stores are required to liquidate the old sku (or netgear gives them some money back in order to try to move new stock with the newer firmware installed). The datasheets look pretty much identical, except for the model number in the upper right hand corner of each page.

I have this router. It is very good, and penetrates through more walls than it should. Covers great distance and manages a TON of different devices (12 in my house).

As posters have noted, check the firmware through the app once a month for an update (the app tells you on the home screen). Otherwise the connections can be finnicky if you dont maintain the newest firmware

I haven't been in the market for a new wifi router in a long time.

Does anyone still reflash their firmware to "better" firmware that is third-party/open source like DD-WRT and/or FreshTomato? Is that no longer a thing to try to fix the shortcomings of OEM firmware?

I am using the one from Optimun Online Dlink DIR-868L WiFi Router AC. I just purchase this one base on your comments about range. Hopefully it does better range since this DLink is from 2014

RAX48 should have the same hardware as RAX50 with crippled firmware.

I am currently running Asus rt-ac5400 and it is good. I also bought an used Netgear r7000 and flashed with tomato firmware and configured windscribe on it. Both are working good.
