If one has discerning ears one should spend more than $100 on a receiver.
I bought one of these last month after seeing good reviews. I was really disappointed by the separation and audio quality in general. Some people probably won't mind, but if you have discerning ears, this really doesn't cut it. I returned it and went with a vintage unit which is significantly better.

This is very true.

I had an old Sansui that I miss very much these days, though I am making a Yamaha unit work.

For anyone reading, there are a number of reputable ebay sellers who restore vintage audio gear. THAT is the best bang for your buck if you have some idea of what you're looking for.

$150 will get you an excellent functionally restored vintage unit if you dgaf about brand names.

I'm using a 7.1ch Denon from ~2010. It does everything with the limitation of no ARC. Connected via optical. It can be volume controlled over hdmi from the Roku TV. Cost me $10 at goodwill, where I also picked up several speakers

Not bad, but if you're just looking for a 2-channel receiver and have time to shop (and be uber-cheap), consider going by a few thrift stores. I scored a vintage Denon receiver for $15 at a thrift store and it drives my 2-channel setup nicely.

I also got a Nakamichi RX-505 tape deck for $4 at my local Salvation Army store, but that's another story. Point being that sometimes thrift stores get high end stuff and have no idea what they have.

Any specific Denons to look for in these thrift shops? How do you know they aren't selling non working receivers?

Beware that the speaker terminals on the back of this unit are the garbage clip kind that only accept very thin speaker wire. Sony cheaped out and didn't use regular 5 way binding posts.
