Note, for reusable face mask, some of the good brand actual said it can only wash so many times like 40 times, etc, before need to throw it away.

And to have as good filter rating as 3-ply meltblown layer mask, you need to add a good filter (to reusable mask that has filter section) like tea bag or vacuum filters , special filter paper, etc.
As for price, with 3-ply mask now cost as low as $4-$10 per 50, it is not that expensive for daily use anymore.

So when you add in the additional filter cost (if you want good filtration) and replacement every 20-40 washes, the cost of reusable facemask may actually be higher. Plus the inconvenience of washing it daily (and keeping track of how many washes before replacing it).
And of course for the similar filtration rating, 3-ply meltblown mask is likely lighter and more breathable than any 3 layers reusable face mask with add-in filter.

And the success of using face mask in Asian countries are likely in part due to everyone using 3-ply facemask that has decent filtration. Places like Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, people actually look for not just any 3-ply mask but surgical grade 3-ply mask if possible since it is for their protection. Why cut cost on protective equipment for your own health and health of friends/family/coworker/etc around you. Smilie

Latest study from University of Arizona show even cloth mask with vacuum filters insert did a pretty good job of protecting yourself from catching Covid. (note, the research is for how much it protect "yourself" and not about protect others.)

...N99 masks, which are even more efficient at filtering airborne particles than N95 masks, are obviously one of the best options for blocking the virus, as they can reduce average risk by 94-99% for 20-minute and 30-second exposures .....

The next best options, according to the research, are N95 and surgical masks and, perhaps surprisingly, vacuum cleaner filters, which can be inserted into filter pockets in cloth masks. The vacuum filters reduced infection risk by 83% for a 30-second exposure and 58% for a 20-minute exposure.

Scarves, which reduced infection risk by 44% after 30 seconds and 24% after 20 minutes

"Proper use of masks is so important," Wilson said. "Also, we were focusing on masks protecting the wearer, but they're most important to protect others around you if you're infected. If you put less virus out into the air, you're creating a less contaminated environment around you. As our model shows, the amount of infectious virus you're exposed to has a big impact on your infection risk and the potential for others' masks to protect them as well."

Which? face mask tests reveal huge differences in filtration [which.co.uk]

"First consumer test of reusable face coverings reveals some can filter 99% of particles, while others manage just 7%"

How to choose a reusable face covering
  1. Try to go for three layers, but at least two – our tests showed a clear difference between single-layer face coverings and those with a double or triple layer.
  2. Choose your material wisely. Tightly woven cotton is a good option as the homemade mask we tested did well on filtration – and the worst-performing masks were a single layer of mostly polyester. Ideally, a mix of different fabrics such as cotton, polypropylene and different types of polyester is good.
  3. Make sure it's adjustable or comes in different sizes – our testers rated face coverings higher for fit and comfort when they were adjustable, either by the ear loops and mouldable nose wire or because the mask came in different sizes.

Thanks - these seem on par with a lot of the homemade and store-bought masks I have come across. I have seen them in store but not actually purchased yet. The child size seem a hair bigger than the Old Navy's (which are quite small), and the adult size seem quite large. This size is perfect for giving them a try. Always great to have a couple spares on hand! I was able to replicate the deal. Thanks again!
