Just getting started with DAW's and music production/editing with my son. Reaper vs. Cakewalk. Pro's/Con's of each. Which one of those two do all you Slickdealer DAW masters recommend?

Just a note.

Their upgrade scheme is steep. V10.x suite owners get charged ~$185 ? to upgrade to V11.

Cubase 11 = $99

Subscriptions suck but they are all charging almost yearly. At least with paid upgrades you
are getting something.

Registered but no email as of yet. Takes a while I guess?

Update: NM, you need to click on "Download for free" again to go into an HTML page where you will have the serial number.

FYI. Cakewalk isn't for Mac. It's windows only. I didn't see that mentioned anywhere in here.

From a producer: It's a solid way to get started, but be warned you're limited to 8 tracks. You can make piano arrangements and start playing around with some basic beats, but you'll hit 8 tracks and grow out of it quickly. 8 tracks can be my layered instrumentation for a single melody in a full song, let alone percussion and fx.

Again, great starting point, but if you're pretty serious about doing music production, don't expect this to last you more than a few months, a year at best.

Sad that Cubase is not getting the love it used to. In Cakewalk Sonar I had to find the parameter I wanted to automate in a list of thousands of parameters (available to automate like in a VST pluggin). In Cubase press record automation and start moving the knob for the automation track to be created for you instead of picking from a giant list. Huge thing that made me hop away from Cakewalk. I always loved and used Ableton for quick creativity because of it's looping abilities. I would never produce a track from it as it's not as good as Cubase for workflow and editing... but for quick creativity there is no competition (maybe FL Studio which I never fell in love with).

No, I've had the abelton lite before where it wouldn't render to wav or mp3 or save (can't remember), so I'm hesitant as well.
If you need to change audio or video formats, file types, there's always Handbrake.

If you have a mac definitely start with Garageband. No cost and it has a lot of features that the professional DAWs have.

On PC Reaper lets you do a 60 day trial at no cost with full features. So definitely no harm in trying! If you are working primarily with real audio (singing, guitars, piano) then Reaper is more economical and constantly updating with new features. If you are looking for more midi based things then reaper doesn't have a lot of built in sounds, loops, midi instruments like other daws do.

To me the closest thing to garageband on PC is mixcraft. Good mix of features & price and it is easy to use for those starting out. https://acoustica.com/mixcraft

I personally use Studio One 5 and it my favorite DAW I have ever used.https://shop.presonus.com/Studio-...ofessional

They do have a subscription model too if you want to try it for a few months.

We just bought the paid version for my kids computer. Should he download this one too?
No point. The lite version offered here is like a trial version without all the features of the full version you bought him.

FYI once you register this version on Ableton.com, you get an option to purchase Ableton Studio for $529. Then you can use Paypal with 5% cash back on Chase Freedom quarterly rewards & it brings the price of Ableton Suite down to $493 ...!!! Is this an all time low?

Is Hitfilm what you would recommend for special effects? What if I have already have access to the full Adobe suite?

Super helpful comments btw, thank you!

If you have Adobe CC, After Effects and Premiere can do all the effects of Hitfilm.
Titles, tracking, gunfire, 3D composites, etc.

Adobe is not focused on the special effects like Hitfilm is, so you're not going to get videos from Adobe showing you how to make all these effects. There are 3rd party videos that do. Also, certain things like muzzle flash for guns, etc are easier in Hitfilm because they have preset effects. You'd have to build these yourself in AE (or download other people's projects). These presets make life easier.

Because AE is not inside Premiere, you do jump between the two. In Hitfilm, everything's in one program.

There is NO free AE, so you can't make your own Marvel / Action / SciFi films with Adobe products. Hitfilm Express is free, so you can.

Think of AE as a kitchen full of tools and food in the fridge. Hitfilm is the same but the food's been precut, recipes laid out.

If you are looking for good VST Instrument and Effect Plugins, get Computer Music magazine. They have a 5GB base bundle of plugins and the latest issue (288, November 2020) has Synthwave KZ, a very capable synth plugin to do all those 80s bass lines and sweeps.

Yeah, it's not free, but it is a slick deal!
