Just getting started with DAW's and music production/editing with my son. Reaper vs. Cakewalk. Pro's/Con's of each. Which one of those two do all you Slickdealer DAW masters recommend?
Depends on where you imagine going with these skills as a career or hobby.

Between Pro Tools First and Reaper, obviously Pro Tools if you're wanting to do audio editing work on tv and films. The Hollywood standard and the only tool you need to know well for those editing jobs.

...

Reaper vs Cakewalk.

Cakewalk came out first, already had the kitchen sink and more by the time Reaper arrived.

Because of the cost of DAWs back then, Reaper was targeted at the home user, under $100 range. But today, with Cakewalk being free, that advantage has vanished.

If you're doing MIDI keyboards into the daw and back, Cakewalk might be the better start. But most nowadays fall back on software syths, touchscreen virtual instruments, usb control devices.

..

Both have more than sufficient features to get you going and there's nothing you can't do in one or the other at your level. Either will do fine.

Cakewalk is windows only.
Reaper can run on Macs.

....

Now, what is a Daw?
Oddly, Cubase has one of the better introductions.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OqMrgQ0bHYo

You can see Cakewalk , Reaper can do the same.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dKZQOkf792g

You have TRACKS of audio you record voices or play instruments into.
You have AUDIO CONTROLS to change the volume, pitch etc., mix tracks.
You can edit, cut, copy, paste, music segments.
You have EFFECTS to change the audio - reverb, noise reduction, etc.
You can play music into the tracks thru midi, usb, on screen instruments.

But you'll notice a Lot is done by plugins.
Separate instruments, effects, etc that you can get free or pay for that go beyond the basics - this is really where modern music creation's playground is.
The Daws all have similar base features, so plugins let you create music that can't be reproduced with traditional instruments on stage live.

For the beginner and hobbiest, all the daws do the above. Sight interface differences, menus in different places, but spend a few hours learning any and you'll have access to the base features you need to get started.

So, Reaper vs Cakewalk?
It's like a good car or shoe. Test drive both, try them out, you'll gravitate towards one or the other quickly based on what you want to do and the way they layout controls, menus, instruments. The Daw that is better for You.

...

That said, like Microsoft Office used to be only on a computer, but now can be accessed online free as Office Online, daw and video editors are migrating to the web.

Ie. Why install and setup when everything can be done for you and you simply record and edit?

https://www.bandlab.com/creation-features

The features aren't as massive, but you can see the future. Anyone on anything will be able to record, edit, mix, collaborate, produce online. I'm sure they'll find a reason to charge for certain features in the future.

Not even in the same ballpark. That is an audio editor, this is music production software.

Ah, almost forgot!
Kawehi's loops reminded me (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jMNIvLiCnw8)

For just plain fast and fun, Acid!!

Honestly, if you just love to jump into any one daw and just Create loops and modern music - dance, edm, dj, etc tracks - it really doesn't get easier than Acid. Just paint in samples.

Acid is also really fast at dropping in background music into tv/films that can use such looped compositions when you have a large sample library (Magix sells a bunch, more free and paid elsewhere).

I have Live 10 Suite, but I originally used a free copy of Lite 8 (I think Soundcloud promotion?) to upgrade from in combination with a 33% off deal, and saved a good chunk of money on getting the full version.

I love Ableton Live for music production, but I did need some 3rd party plugins to complete it. For example, Ableton's guitar amp plugin is inadequate. I can do a lot with Operator, but for electronic stuff I can't do without Massive and a few other plugins.

In comparison, Apple's Logic has much more out of box and is cheap if you already have a Mac.

But this is free, so get it and see if you like Ableton and it's Session View! If you like what is available in Lite, you're going to love the Suite.

This or torrents and kvraudio?
Lol just kidding
Actually I've used Ableton since 7, Reaper, Waveform, Pro Tools, FL, CM Studio, Cakewalk, Cubase, Reason, and others.
I'm more partial to Ableton, but that's because it plays nicely with my controllers via midi edit mode. Next would be Pro Tools because I've mixed and mastered many tracks on it.
It's free though!

Very impressive. Good if you're going for youtube covers. But even then, probably the exception rather than the rule.

Question...where can I find decent orchestra/chorus sounds? I see the add-ons available for purchase on Ableton, but does anyone have any feedback on these or other packs available out there? tia
I've only been using Ableton for a few months, and was using Intro until a couple of days ago.
The two main sources for third party sounds I've been using are SoundFonts (using the Sforzando VST by Plogue) and the free Spitfire Audio LABS packs. I especially like the Spitfire strings and chorus, as long as they're not changing notes too quickly. LMAO

Did both sites, both files .exe & .msi.
Do I have to install right away or can do it anytime later?

You haven't authorized a computer yet. Here's how

To authorize Live, open it on any computer with an internet connection and Live will guide you through the authorization process. You can also use these step-by-step instructions.
If you cannot authorize online, try offline authorization.
You can download previous Live versions from the download archive.
Transfer ownership of your license to another person.
Can this be done at my convenience? As I dont want to install it now until I clear up some drive space on Surface Pro.

Anytime. Go to Ableton.com, create a login if you don't already have one, and go to Account in the upper corner. Next to "Licenses" is a drop down that includes "Register a Product." Paste the serial code you get from Splice, and you're good to download it later. I already have Ableton Suite, but I was able to add this license to my account.

I figure this extra license gives me some flexibility. I'm specifically thinking of my children or wife, in that I can download Lite for them to try, so they're not overwhelmed by the other versions at first. Or, I may want to put Lite on some random future laptop and have it available for quick ideas.
