I'm hoping to get this for my friend's wife even if it's a discontinued version. i think it will do the job just fine for what she will use it for as long as the consumables are not discontinued as well.

You have to use Cricut's design program to print/cut (you can't just use it directly from illustrator or whatever) and that program has a store tab with ready-to-go cut files and fonts you can purchase. Fonts prices can vary a lot but a typical greeting card runs about $2-$5 on that store so $80 actually ain't bad. Unless you just get their subscription service which unlocks all the designs if I'm not mistaken.
I want this but I'm afraid to buy it because it's a discontinued model. From what I understand, Cricut has stopped allowing older model machines to use their software in the past and the machine pretty much useless without it. Anyone know if there's any truth to that?
will my friend be able to buy new blades and such for her cricut if i get it for her? i see her using it for the next few years and would like her to be able to use it even longer if possible.

Is there a version of Cricut that can use illustrator to print/cut from? If so, any direction on how. Wife uses it and has to use that god awful Cricut design program. I'd like to migrate her to illustrator if it's possible.

Anyone know how to do this. My wife loves the machine but hates the software.
This is the old machine. If you're interested in the newer version the Cricut Explore Air 2 bundle (with $30 digital credit) in Daybreak color often pops up on sale for $179 on Walmart. Or the emerald non bundle machine only comes with a couple tools included at $179. Both currently in stock now. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Cricut-.../803214775 http://www.walmart.com/ip/Cricut-.../451212065
From what I know, the newer Explore Air 2 is faster cutting and Bluetooth capable so you can design on your phone through the app as well while the Explore Air you have to have it hooked up to the computer.
