"TCL takes privacy and security very seriously, and particularly appreciates the vital role that independent researchers play in the technology ecosystem."
TCL says the problem affects "a limited number" of its TVs—model numbers 32S330, 40S330, 43S434, 50S434, 55S434, 65S434, and 75S434.
This TV has a Chinese backdoor, confirmed by TCL. Just for your information.

------

A few tips/info for those who bought this TV:

1. Pairing remote via bluetooth

The remote uses IR by default which is a pain in the neck. Press the Home and OK buttons simultaneously, the remote will pair via bluetooth.

2. Checking for dark spots/dead pixels

Install "Puffin TV Browser" from the play store. Then use the browser to visit http://lcdtech.info/en/tests/dead.pixel.htm for dead pixel test, click start. You will be able to switch through different colors using the "OK" button on the remote. Use these to check if your TV has dead pixels or dark spots.

3. Updating OS

Go to Settings -> Device Preferences -> About -> System Update and select Network Update. The TV should find the latest version of the OS (if not already installed) and start updating.

4. Fixing the lag in Android TV

Go to Settings -> Device Preferences -> About. Scroll down till you are on "Build". Keep pressing OK while on Build several times to enable Developer Mode. Now go to Settings -> Device Preferences -> Developer Options. Scroll down until you see "Background process limit" under Apps subheading. Change this from "Standard limit" to "At most 4 processes" or below. You can also disable all the animations under "Drawing" subheading to make the TV even snappier.

Note: Some folks have reported that these settings don't stick. That is, the TV forgets these when you restart. This is a bug with earlier versions of TCL software, make sure you are running the latest version.

5. Calibration

It seems that the calibration settings from rtings work well for this TV. Try the following settings (press the "Settings" button on the remote (gear symbol) to get to the TV settings.

Picture -> Picture Mode = Movie
Picture -> Brightness = 50
Picture -> Advanced Settings -> Brightness Settings -> Brightness = 50
Picture -> Advanced Settings -> Brightness Settings -> Contrast = 90
Picture -> Advanced Settings -> Color -> Color Saturation = 45
Picture -> Advanced Settings -> Color -> Color Temperature = Warm
Picture -> Advanced Settings -> Color -> Dynamic Contrast = Off
Picture -> Advanced Settings -> Color -> Dynamic Backlight = Off
Picture -> Advanced Settings -> Clarity -> Sharpness = 0

SDer drfilthy recommends a slight variation here: https://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=142626937&postcount=1133

Go to YouTube and watch a few 4k videos. "Breathtaking Colors of Nature in 4k" is a good one. Play with these picture settings to suit your needs.

-------------------ISSUES [I] & FIXES [F]:

I: While streaming Youtube, occasionally would abruptly exit Youtube and enter regular TV broadcast without me touching remote control. Does not happen with Netflix. Remote is not paired

You are on the wrong website. You need to move along and visit SlickCraigsBayer.com. Congrats, you just bragged about the little beer money you just earned and robbed opportunities for 8 people who could have actually use these TVs
This is probably better than the Hisense, but not by much. Rtings has reviews on previous models on both. The Samsung is definitely not worth $250 more. I'd say the only upgrade from these that would be worth it would be a TCL 6 series or the comparable midrange Hisense.

I have a TCL 6 series, Hisense from BB, and Onn from Walmart. The 6 series is noticeably better than the other two but not by a massive margin. The Hisense and Onn are almost identical in terms of image quality.

It's insane to me that they can sell quality 4k 65" TVs for this price. Like seriously, the Hisense and Onn look unbelievable for the price.

It has Bluetooth, so most Bluetooth remotes should work.

But I don't need it to last 5-7 years.

The 43" IPS x800h Sony I've been grudgingly using since my living room TV died back in June can go back to being my computers 2nd screen and I can sit directly in front of this thing until Black Friday 2021 and an OLED without compromises.

I just need a placeholder TV and at $230 I can live with the cost. Next Thanksgiving the TCL can move to my office for watching the security cameras and I'll get a TV that I want instead of one that'll do.

After that, bet I could sell it for $150+ on Craig's List making it a really cheap "rental". If not, it can go to my office for watching the security cameras.

Yes, it's a budget TV for a reason. But sometimes those reasons are an acceptable trade off.
Cool Cool cool.. it can last that long if you spend the $ to do so.. that's the problem. People here are so willing to buy a super budget TV but will spend $1000+ on an phone that is old within 6 months.. you do the math.

Annnd, there you go again. Wow. Really, just wow.

No, you do not know what I want or need better than I do. If I followed your advice, I would be stuck with a TV I am not happy with for years.

As you go through life feeling that people are ignoring you, well, if you don't listen, you won't be listened too. Just how it works.

Hello,
I am using TCL 65" tv from past 1 week and the only issue I am facing is with Screen brightness. While watching netflix/ prime, screen brightness suddenly dim by itself. Picture setting is at "Smart HDR" and no custom changes.
Can anyone suggest if this is real issue and tv needs to be exchanged ?
Thanks in advance..!!
I notice the same problem with my TV - did anyone respond/provide any details about this?

Yeah, I have the same. And with the same settings ... not sure if a firmware update will fix it, doesn't bother me THAT much, but still....

I'm pretty sure that's the problem. Smart HDR seems to be just that...it adjusts the contrast and possibly color spectrum on the fly. My recommendation? Don't use it. Use Vivid or Movie and leave Smart HDR alone.

That sounds like a great idea.. Never thought about that.. If that's the case, that's awesome. At the end of the day, for 229.99 minus 5% off (Target Card) - I want someone to tell me how this isn't one of the best BANG FOR YOUR BUCK TV's out there. I guess that is assuming it works for at least several years! lol

If you have button remapper, what were some good changes you've made? I added mute to the long press of the Ok button. Can't think of anything else I need.

Short version...out of the box accuracy is very good for the S434. Limited adjustment is needed from default 'Movie' settings.

Eco Settings: disable all of the power saving options, such as Dynamic Backlight.

For SDR:

SDR choose the Movie picture mode. Brightness Settings in the 'Advanced Settings' menu, Contrast to '90', Brightness to '44', and Black Level to '50'. Set Color Saturation to '50', and Tint (G/R) to '50' in the Color menu. Finally, 'Warm' Color Temperature.

For HDR: Recommended leaving these settings to their default settings in HDR.

However, if you find HDR too dim, setting Gamma to '1.8' and Dynamic Contrast to 'High' results in a brighter image

Me, I went with HDR 1.8 gamma and high dynamic contrast for HDR content and it looks pretty good.

This TV is not an OLED by any stretch, but looks good enough when viewed dead on front & center. Keep in mind it is 1/8 the cost of a similar sized OLED. TV is horribly washed out even 10 degrees off center. It's worth $230 for 65"...especially for a TV I leave running all day on CNN.

The TV is not "horribly washed out even 10 degrees off center". There is a demo here on rtings ( link [rtings.com] ) , and I would disagree with even this because in my tests, using 4k birds from youtube on this TV, I felt no meaningful degradation while moving within a 90 degree range of the center of the TV, up and down, left and right.

Sure, I'm no pro, but calling it horribly washed out at 10 degrees is as much a hyperbole as shrills of "Chinese backdoor!", which, btw, was confirmed by the very Chinese company TCL, who then invited more complaints because they patched the "backdoor" (supposedly because they did not ask permission to patch the "backdoor", of all reasons). At this point, I'm not sure what people mean by "backdoor" anymore; maybe people just have their backdoors visited too often these days, while binging CNN lol
