I went ahead and ordered an iPhone 12 pro max 256 GB after some hesitation
Order 12/28/20 evening and already have it delivered 12/29/20 evening in LA area

I am already on a unlimited bundle contract with good savings, so I was ok with the 30 months, Device came unlocked which was an added bonus no need to request it to be unlocked from AT&T

Did some analysis on savings before ordering at Walmart vs AT&T with a $700 credit for 30 months

Device cost at Walmart: $1049.10
Monthly payment: 34.97 per month
Discount for trade-in: -23.33 per month
Monthly price after discount: 11.64 per month
Walmart Final price for device after 30 months you pay: = $349.20
Walmart charged sales tax on the discounted price which resulted in a saving of $15.36

Device cost at AT&T: 1199.99
Monthly payment: 40.00 per month
Discount for trade-in: -23.33 per month
Monthly price after discount: 16.67 per month
AT&T Final price for device after 30 months you pay: = $500.10
Hi there thanks for the details, I am thinking doing an upgrade through Walmart. When you did yours, do you select you have a trade in or no? Or you just select 30 months installment and then take trade in to att store? TIA

The latter. Just buy the phone for an upgrade on 30 month ATT installment plan and do the trade in at an ATT store later..

If I choose the installment with the down payment would I still qualify for the trade in credits? Or do I choose the installment plan without the down payment?

You have to do 30 months installments, clearly stated on the terms.

I'm on AT&T; don't want an unlimited plan. Is the $200 discount the cheapest way for me to buy an iPhone 12 Pro 256GB?

First of all, it is not $200 but $150 in actual. No, this is not the cheapest deal if you don't want to do trade in and/or sign up for unlimited plan.

Call ATT and ask for the retention/cancellation department. They will give you $300 off the retail price.
