LoL, You be the judge.
Lowes (Kobalt) 232 pieces
117 sockets, 3 90-tooth ratchets, 4 extensions, 30 wrenches and 78 accessories.
Home Depot (Husky) 270 pieces
148 sockets, 3 72-tooth ratchets, 4 extensions, 14 wrenches and 101 accessories.
Craftsman (I had the wrong set. See my updated comparison later in this thread. (page 8) Other set has 111 sockets. )
84 sockets, 3 72-tooth ratchets, 8 extensions, 8 wrenches and ?? other tools.
These are great sets at this price point. 10 years back you couldn't get a nice set like this for less than $200+. I think this was the set I scored here on SD for the $30 range. That deal is not repeatable and was a YMMV type deal. I managed to grab a few at that price, awesome gifts.
Unless Lowes goes belly up, Kobalt tools have a lifetime warranty which is nice.
There are a lot of things to consider when you are buying a mechanic tool set such as 6 points vs 12 point sockets, filler tools that only bump the number count up, etc. If you aren't trying to go crazy in the details and end up spending more, this is worthy to have a tool set immediately at its price point.
Yeah I scored this set back then for $30 too. I wish I would've bought a few extras for gifts.
I just bought the husky 270 piece and the quality seems kind of crappy and a little poor (including the box). Doesn't stand out from my other home tools. I don't do anything fancy on my car and I am a new homeowner, but is this kobalt set better for me because there appears to be more screwdrivers? I don't know what I would use ratchet and sockets for.
Looks very similar to ~300 piece Kobalt set I picked up on clearance at Lowe's a few years ago for $79. I would bet most of the difference in piece count comes down to the oodles of screwdriver bits (triples of some sizes) that came with my set. It's been a great set with my only minor gripe being the toolbox isn't great. Well worth $99 for this set though.
Same ... hope they improved the toolbox. It's come apart at the top and I'm afraid it'll blow up at anytime I try to pick it up.
