Would anyone know if running games off of Steam from this would affect performance vs ssd or is it basically longer load times? I can live with the wait to save $$$
it just affects the loading time.

I'm not sure I understand why this is any better than the $90 WD 5TB on sale the other day. This seems like a "gamer" drive that's only a gamer drive because of branding...

Would this be fine for a PS5/Xbox Series X to play backwards compatible games or is an SSD much better?
This is fine. The SSD will be faster but probably not worth the incremental cost IMO.

Yeah, I'm wondering if this drive is worth $10 more, or if it's just a "gamer" tax.

I grabbed one of these recently, thinking I'd be able to install some PS4 games on it, and then also use it to e.g. back stuff up from my computers -- Nope.

However the PS4 "prepares" the drive for its use assimilates the whole drive, killing any existing partitions, and makes it unreadable to Windows. No options to choose a partition or tell it how much of the drive to use.

You can try running "DiskPart" and then there is a "Clean" option

You can also boot off a linux disc or USB and format it with that

Is this as good as WD Passport for regular use? or just specific for game drives?
Regular use is fine, not for games only.

That's true, unless you purchase like 1TB SSD for same price of not more. This does speeds over 110MB/S transferring large size files, slower with little files.

It's a black drive first, gamer drive as second. Basically fast drive marketed to gamers. Been buying black drives the past 15 years. Worth it.

Does the black indicate performance or reliability

Im deciding between this and the popular seagate game drive "For PS4". I know the platform labeled ones just mean its ready to go without formatting but Im curious about the dependability between the two. Anyone? Are the WD Blacks more trustworthy?

It says (on the Best Buy link) that maximum transfer rates are 5000MB/s and maximum read speed is 130MB/s.

Clearly must be wrong. Anyone know the true max transfer rate + write rate?

Thanks.
