That's a complex question. Most HDHomerun models are just network tuners, so you would need software on a PC or NAS to record with. The HDHomerun Scribe models do have a built-in DVR with a 1TB HDD, but cost more than their equivalent Tablo model. HDHomerun stores video as MPEG-2 while most Tablo models transcode it to MPEG-4 (H.264). H.264 allows storing many more hours of video and works better for streaming over Wi-Fi.

With most Tablo models, you provide your own external HDD that's up to 8TB. (I use a 5TB Seagate Backup Plus on one unit and a 2TB Seagate on another.)

The apps for each line are different and available for different platforms.

So two questions are important to consider: Do you watch more TV live or more timeshifted via recordings? Which devices/platforms do you intend to watch on (smart TVs, streaming media players, Android, iOS, etc.)?

I have a HDHomerun Prime which uses a cable card to tune into channels. I recently cancelled my Cable service and was looking to get an over the air TV tuner. Was looking at the Silicondust line but they are way to expensive at the moment.

While using the HDHomerun Prime the main way of using it was from an Nvidia Shield and Xbox One. For recording programs (rarely) we used the Nvidia Shield that has Android TV or an old PC I have with windows 7 and Windows Media Center still running.

Those the Tablo also streams to the local network similar to the HDHomeruns?
