debating.. my printer is down.. thinking of getting as a stop gap..

but it has tri-color tanks.. those suck!,

printer is cheap but always get you on the ink with those even the refill kits are more of a pain/expensive.

Bought this printer last year and works well. HP is discontinuing the free ink plan. Cheapest plan i believe is $1 now for 15 pages per month

$1 is good for those that rarely print. I just need to do shipping and return labels every now and then.

A set of remanufactured/third party cartridges (1 B/W and 1 tri-color) is at best $37 ... more than the cost of the printer.

A couple of basic questions:

1) out of the box, how many prints can I get from the ink that comes with the printer

2) do I have to do the hp subscription if I get this? Or can I get my own ink?

3) is it more economical to go with hp subscription?

The exact reason why I've always avoided HP inkjets and gone with Canons. Just payed $8.00 for two sets of 5 cartridges for my Canon MX920.

And how do you get around Canon's DRM on aftermarket cartridges. I bought a whole set and the printer "blew up". AARGH!!

As printers are getting "smarter". They're getting sneakier and conniving.
My printer can detect that I refilled the cartridges and automatically disables them.

Have the Envy 5540. Love instant ink.

I calculated that I spent about $150-$200 in a year on ink using the Epson XP-600 for printing very few pages. With HP instant ink, I paid about ~$40 for the year on the free tier (I went over the free tier nearly every month). This year I switched to the $3 plan and I should be paying $36 total for the year.

Not bad.

Not to mention, it's in HP's best interest to stop the ink from constantly being replaced. So they ship the extra large tanks and the printer doesn't do a stupid cleaning cycle every time it's turned on (something my old Epson printer did which used a ton of ink).

I am 100% happy with instant ink.

2) you can get your own ink from the store.

3) 100% more economical to go with the subscription. I paid over $100 a year for my previous Epson printer (XP-600) and barely printed anything. It's also more flexible. You can print full high quality photo prints and pay the same amount as just printing a text document. I love the subscription.
