Yes, they are marketed for NVR and DVR type applications primarily. Im sure you can use them in other ways but this is their intended purpose.

Western Digital has never turned me down for RMA on a shucked drive for not having the enclosure. Always received a replacement with enclosure and all. Not sure about Seagate or others. I sent them raw/shucked drives without enclosure.

Did you have many of these fail over the years?

Looks like BB only allows 1x per customer which is unfortunate.

Learned about shucking last year. I still don't understand why it's cheaper for a product that should be more expensive bring it has a enclosure and cords

Originally it was the warranty difference.. portables typically had the shorter warranty but today they are all shitty warranties.. I still prefer WD over seagate any day

I'll never buy a seagate ever again. I've had so many fail on me in the past (10-15 yrs ago) and lost data. I don't know if they're any better nowadays but this is why brand reputation is important - basically they've lost a customer because of their crap quality in the past. I'll never trust them again and I'll never recommend them. Meanwhile, I've got WD's that are older than the seagate drives that are still going strong.
