It will work but you/he will want to upgrade to the E5 ($250 @ BB) (Same random navigation as 600 series) or i3 ($299 @ BB) for ease of use/lower maintenance.. which also has "smart" navigation via gyro and floor tracker.. It will map your house and go back to base when completely finished. E5 and 600 series bots just run till they loose power then you have to send them out again.
From experience, 600 series rollers get filled with cat hair and are a bitch to clean. The bin is also smaller relative to "better" robots. The difference in real world performance is also significant.... I3 has the most performance to price in terms of suction on a Roomba. E5 is better than 600 series, but weaker than i3's motor/suction which is shared on the i7 model.
Then again I would likely recommend a Chinese bot like a Roborock in the lower price range. Granted i3 isn't bad @ $299 (No base). You pay the Roomba tax, but they're solid beginner bots without many issues.
