They want to encourage people to purchase from those retailers.
Warranties are governed by law.
Granted...they can refuse to honor warranties due to a technicality (and often do) but as long as the item was bought new from a licensed merchant and not a reseller. They "HAVE" to honor the warranty. They even have to honor the warranty if the item was bought new from a "Bait & Switch" merchant.

They can refuse items sold as refurbished/used, and second owners. eg... your brother bought it new and you bought it from him after he used it, even for a day.
There's tons of sneaky things electronic manufactures do to screw the public.
eg... those stickers claiming: "Removal Voids Warranty" are illegal.
You have the right to open a product that you own and as long as you do not damage it or modify it. The warranty cannot be voided.
