One of a number of YouTube videos on refilling your tanks yourself using dry ice from your local grocery store (YMMV).

Bought a similar deal from Target a couple weeks ago. I love this thing. A couple tips: DO NOT use anything other than PURE WATER to carbonate. Carbonating anything other than straight, unflavored water (even fruit infused water) will result in a super fizzy mess and a nozzle that will harbor bacteria. There is no advantage to flavoring before carbonation. Also, for fizzier drinks, use very, very cold water. Additional flavoring syrups from other brands like Mio or other water additives work great too, just don't use anything powdered unless you dissolve it in water first.
It's very easy to refill canisters yourself with dry ice and save a LOT of money.
Dry ice sells for $2-3 a pound at grocery store. You need about 1.5lbs to fully fill the canister.
Wear gloves!
Make sure canister is empty by pressing release valve on top of the bottle with your finger. Take a wrench and unscrew the brass valve from canister, take note not to lose the black rubber washer. Throw 1.5lbs of dry ice into a blender to turn it into powder. Attached a funnel to canister with masking tape. Pour dry ice into canister, leave couple inches from top for valve. Screw in valve and tighten with wrench, don't over tighten it won't unscrew under pressure. Let the canister sit for 2-3 hours in warm temperature for ice to turn to co2. Enjoy your fizzy pop!
Alternatively, for $1 more you can get the Fizzi Starter Kit with a bottle brush + extra bottle caps at SodaStream.com

This thing is awesome. I did a cost analysis a while back (buried in another thread here) but you definitely save a significant amount of money over buying cans, even compared to the Bubly sales Target has now and then. Few tips:

- Don't overfill the bottle beyond the line, or else have a towel in hand when the bottle overflows.
- Make sure to press the carbonation button down fully. My wife didn't press hard enough at first and complained there was no carbonation.
- I find 2-3 second spurts to work best. I usually need to press about 4 times to get it fizzy enough.
- When you hear a burst of pressure being released from the bottle after pressing the button (it's noticeably louder than the first couple bursts), you're pretty much maxed out so don't bother continuing to inject carbonation. I usually get there in about 4 three second presses (give or take 1). If your bottle has been in use for a while, might take an extra press.

I got the $70 deal with the extra couple small bottles and this is one of the best purchases I've ever made. Drinking non-flavored carbonated water for me has completely killed any desire to drink soda. OEM CO2 refills are very reasonably priced and easy to find (got mine at Staples), especially since it only costs about $16, which I just got last week and was my first refill after owning for a little over three months. If you're extremely frugal and hardcore, there are DIY tutorials on how you can rig this to work with a huge third party CO2 tank that'll last you over a year.

You can also buy the paintball CO2 adapter and get refills at your local sporting goods store for very cheap. 99% of large Co2 cylinders come from the same place. Sodastream would like you to believe that there is "food grade" and "industrial grade" and only there's is "food grade". This is a complete scare tactic. Your sporting goods store gets the the same tanks as McDonald's does.

Not that I can think of. I fill them to the brim with powder co2. Which is about twice it's label capacity. Been working fine for years. If you want to be careful, use scale and measure exact same amount to the gram.
So no dry ice bombs?

Main thing I'd recommend is looking for one of the models that can use the larger 130L size tanks, even if you have to find one used. IMO it's a lot more convenient not to have to change out the canister as often. I got lucky though and found both of my 130L canisters at a local resale shop for like $5 each.

Any dangers of exceeding pressure capacity of the cylinder?
Not if you're just capable of using a simple scale that you can set to zero (tare) before filling. It was 2lb dry ice => 32oz CO2 for the larger 130L size canister, or just 14.5oz for the smaller 60L tanks. Nothing magic about it, 1lb solid = 16oz gas, once melted. Actually, a good bit will sublimate just while you're breaking it up (if you buy it in slabs) and filling the bottle. I found I need about 50% extra (3LB?) to get near a full 130L canister once I get home. Cost me a little more than $6/ 130oz vs $15 for a 60L exchange (ie. $6 << $30 (60L x 2)) Only reason it cost me $6 each is the dry packs were larger than I needed and no way to buy a smaller one at the store near me.
There are a few videos on youtube for example

Tank exchange cost kills any savings... either buy large co2 tank and refill yourself, hook straight to large co2 tank or do it as a novelty... dry ice is not convenient to say the least espically if you drink bubbly water often.
It is a bit inconvenient, but if you do several refills at the same time it's not that bad and only takes 10min to setup (purge and open canisters + crush dry ice) and 5min or so per bottle once you know what you're doing. I picked up two large 130L canisters just so I can refill them both at the same time when needed, and they last me six months or so before I have to do it again.

Mine stopped working after 6 months or so. I can see that it's carbonating the water because I am using a new tank and I can see bubbles, but there is no fizz even after adding the syrups and refrigerating. Do I need a new bottle or a new seal on the cap?
Seal on the cap might make a difference after several days or so, but not immediately. I read something about making sure the nozzle is clear. Try holding the Soda Stream upside down without the plastic bottle and give it a few blast of the CO2 to try and clear anything. If you carbonate juices or after the syrup is already in the bottle, might need to try and clean it out... maybe a toothpick or Qtip...? Never tried that myself. Also, should work better if you have the water chilled before you carbonate. Finally, while it's important not to overfill, it also helps not to under fill. The tip of the nozzle should be just below the surface of the water.

Both OEM refills still cost a good bit more than the CO2 really should and DIY tanks / adapters have extra costs as well. If you really want to save $ and aren't afraid of a little work every few months, just use dry ice, like has been mentioned (see wiki link). Even though you can find crushed dry ice that's easier to fill the tanks with, I stick with what's supposedly food grade slabs / bricks from a local grocery store. The CO2 pack sizes aren't set and depend on how long they've been sitting (how much is left that hasn't sublimated), so you sometimes have to buy more than you really need (or less), but it costs less than $5 for a 60L tank and less than $8 for a 130L for me in the past. That's with buying 50% extra, just for what get lost after breaking it up and before the tanks can be filled.
PS. Remember to bring a cooler or insulated bag if you're going to buy CO2 at the store.

Are these systems really worth the money to have around? I get seltzer pretty cheap and I don't drink much soda. Looks fun but I'm not sure it's worthy. What are some uses that make it worthy above just buying flavored unsweetened seltzer?

Everyone: I use this with my SS: LorAnn Super Strength Flavor Oils.

One of the listings on Amazon lets you pick 12 flavors for $21. I did this, and picked a bunch. While the look tiny, 4 drops is enough to give a nice strong flavor to one liter. My favorites are pina colada, peach, butter rum, and the various citrus flavors.

They come in nice little glass bottles and just seem to be high quality all around, with a natural high quality flavor like jelly belly beans.

I also mix in 5% grapefruit juice with any of the fruit flavors, gives it an extra natural sweet and tart flavor with minimal sugar.
