Exactly. Joe's charges for returns, too. I've commented in many threads - if you're doing any decently paced or distanced running of ANY kind, pony up for at least a 600 series shoe. The 680 on sale is decent. The 880 is way better and was on here for $39.99, the best deal I've ever seen.
400 and 500 series new balance are all cheap EVA foam and their construction really isn't any better than shoes' half their price.
Ideally, at $40, you'd find a shoe that has fore, mid and rearfoot cushioning and not just foam. That would make a NB shoe a good deal.
These shoes are worth no more than $32.49 and for all of the 680s I've bought at < $30 off of Amazon, I'd say this deal is average at best. Not even a deal. These are all these are worth.
This is solid advice. What is a great resource to learn about the various details of each series?

Glad it's helpful. I've worn New Balance almost exclusively for 26 years including when I ran for competing branded sponsored teams. Anyways, I'm not sure where the best place is nowadays or if this is readily available on NB's site. The easiest way to figure it out (maybe) is to filter their products based on support type( support, neutral or pronation) and look at the series differences. To my knowledge:
X or XX40 = Motion Control or Stability
X or XX60, 70, 80, 90 are all variants of Neutral Cushioning. 90s are lightweight. Higher numbers in front = more technology and more expensive. An 880 will be similar to a 1080 but the 1080 will have more tech. Higher doesn't mean better. The best New Balance shoe for me is an 880.
I've never messed with Fresh Foam models. I guess I'm old school.
would using paypal allow for free return shipping if they don't fit right? since they won't give you free shipping on returns.
"Free....." with a bit of legwork. Assuming you pay with Paypal and want to return the shoes, you pay out-of-pocket to return ship, and then file a claim with Paypal for reimbursement of the return shipping cost.
Or if Joe's is set up to provide a shipping label and deduct the return shipping cost from your refund, you can do that too and Paypal will reimburse the difference of your payment for the shoes and Joe's (after-return-shipping-cost) refund. E.G. You pay $32 for the shoes, decide to return them, Joe's gives you a label to send them back, but deducts $7 for return shipping costs and refunds you $25, you file a claim with Paypal who sends you $7.
I believe there is a $30 maximum per claim (no problem for a pair of shoes) and a maximum of 12 claims per year.
Those who struggle to pay through paypal, log in through your account with joes first then use paypal checkout. Got these at 35, for 10.5 d. Checked out a youtube video before purchasing these and am pretty happy with what i got.

Haven't seen any great deals on here from Joe's. I exclusively wear NB but really just for walking/working and I like these shoes for that.
I've had some Asics and Fila which have just fallen apart after 6 months of basically light use. They were garbage.
Haven't tried the Fresh Foam models either, but from what I saw in the store the canvas on the upper felt really cheap and thin. Unless someone is using nanotech carbon, for me lighter always equals Cheap.
Fortunately, when I do find real deals on NB (not this one) I tend to buy multiple pairs. Guess it's time to pull another new pair out of the box while waiting for a sale.

I do the same thing. The 680v6's were $27.49 from Joe's if I recall and maybe 880s were that cheap but the real-deal $85-125 MSRP shoes getting below $30-40 with them is fewer and far between. I just set my Deal Alerts and buy my 2-3 pairs a year for running and that works well for me. Can still get everything at a good price by being patient.
