Paperwhite looks far better with little or no device lighting, and is readable much like a book. It keeps state in an interesting way - when you suspend it, the ads look like a newspaper or magazine and seem to use no battery power - mine will sit for weeks with no notable battery loss until I power it on. By this token, it is also likely to last on a battery longer. It is a fairly unique feature for a handful of e-readers and doesn't lead to eyestrain. Closest thing to a book I have used.

I can confirm that I was able to get the specials offer disabled after chatting with customer service.

To preface, i'm not taking any jabs on the amazing value of Paperwrite.

do yourself a favor and upgrade to the oasis if you can. I got the paperwrite, and its hard to hold with one hand and rather bright when you read at night.

No input on the Oasis, but my wife has a case with a hand strap wrap-around cover that makes it easy to hold. Brightness is easily adjustable and she has no issues adjusting it when reading late at night. Maybe you are saying that the Oasis has adaptive brightness?

We traded a 2013 Kindle Touch (which has been collecting dust but still holds a charge) for a $5 GC, but at checkout the 20% would not show up (we've done it before), so I chatted, and the CSR put a 20% off on our account in advance of me completing the checkout for the deal.

Data Point: it was not the standard trade-in 20% coupon, but listed as a courtesy credit. I hate using any favors but for the extra $17 off, it seemed worthwhile. Had I known in advance, I may not have bothered, It's a toss-up.

The CSR didn't act like a jerk or explain that the 20% trade-in deal was once per account (which I have performed in the past, read about in these threads, and seen it in their terms). Currently, DW has 3 active Kindle Paperwhites in her rotation. I didn't need to get her this one, but SD.

Does this deal typically re-appear around Christmas? I hadn't planned to get a Kindle over the BF weekend, but my old 2012 one is having trouble with its case, so I'm now tempted to get a new model.

Same here, I missed this deal and the regular Kindle reader is backordered until after Christmas. Was going to jump on this but it was dead... wondering when another deal will come up.

I will say this. I had an ad-supported paperwhite, and simply asked in chat if there was a way to control the type of ads to make sure they would be appropriate if my nephew was using the tablet. they just removed them without me asking..

Do with this what you will.
When did you have this done? I just asked bc it's annoying you click to lock the screen and it pops up a full page ad that stays. My kids are going to see the screen as "on" and try to mess with it. Amazon said they have no ability to remove ads like they used to. I have to go to the website and pay.

About a year ago, although i wouldn't buy it from that representative. I'd simply say you are worried your shopping history might not be appropriate for children or something.

Thank you! I contacted them this morning again. My 2 year old got marshmallow hands all over it seeing ads on the Kindle where I left it.. inconspicuous place I don't have any other tablets so my kids never play with anything like this so it was a major attraction. Somehow she found it in the 5 seconds she was in the room. My 5 year old is also starting to read so she also read the ads @_@.

All you have to do is chat with Amazon and ask them how to remove the ads. They'll give you some spiel about it normally being a $15 charge but since you're such a good customer I'll remove them at no cost.

I've done this with all my Kindles laugh out loud
Is the $15 fee permanent? Or a reoccurring fee?

It would be per device and yes 1 time fee.

Again, all you have to do is chat with Amazon CS and they'll likely remove the ads at no cost
