Editor's Notes & Price Research

On cordcutting.com they discuss the differences between Plex and Emby: "So, if it helps, you can think of Emby as a Kodi-lover's Plex. Emby is for the power-users, the Kodi users, and the people who are comfortable trading clean interfaces and easy setup for increased functionality."

Have had Plex Lifetime subscription for many years, tried Emby& Jellyfin out a month ago just to see how the latest competition is doing and they're both a complete no-go for me. My plex server has a few thousand TV show episodes and movies, and many more thousands of MP3s. There's a Plex app for every device you can imagine and they're all free.

People complaining Plex is bloated, how hard is it to:
1) Choose your profile to login
2) Customize your left menu bar to only show the items in your library

Honestly. If you don't want the plex curated options to show up, you can remove them. Not hard.

Emby has paywalls for the mobile apps, and is more difficult to navigate around.

Not only that, Emby has changed their business model repeatedly. Just google them and you'll see what I'm talking about. Plex has always been about your media & serving it up -- still is.

If you haven't paid for Plex Lifetime, maybe you'd like Emby instead. But I can't see paying for this if you already have Plex.
The emby team had an internal beef about how to monetize emby. The dev team split up and jellyfin is the completely free fork of emby. Jellyfin is less polished because it's a volunteer dev team but if jellyfin improves their apps there's no need to switch.
the biggest crap about this is that there is a 25 device limit that the server admin has no control over. like wtf?

I used to love Plex, but it has gotten bloated. It's clear that their direction is to provide streaming service, and the focus is no longer personal media libraries.

Emby is much more crisp, but not as polished or straightforward for remote access and episode sync to phones (though Plex Sync is hit or miss for me anyway)

I tried to evaluate Emby as a replacement for Plex a while back while I was having some issues with Plex. Seemed decent but it was so locked down on trial I couldn't really test anything without a full commitment to it. After already having paid for Plex I wasn't going to pay a giant chunk of money just to test Emby. Really unfortunate they do it this way. I suspect I would have made the jump.

It is free for Roku and Android clients. But you have to pay if you use it for Android TV, Fire TV, and Windows client. I've used it for about 11 months and I am contemplating on upgrading it.

Just paid for it, let's see how it goes.

Can you use Envy as a music player? That's one thing I was interested about with Plex.

How much is it normally? Is this really only for your content ie photos, movies backed up, music backed up? I have not messed with plex or emby but am curious...

I moved from Plex years ago when I had a issue I couldn't resolve and a run-in with an admin on their forums. I've been really happy with Emby since, they got GPU transcoding going before Plex, and they have a very active dev team. I recommend it if you're thinking of moving away from Plex.

Yes, Emby supports music libraries. It has a pretty decent music player built in.
