Best Buy Voice Alexa skill has Alexa Smart Plugs on sale for $5, plus some other deals.

Link your Best Buy account to the Alexa skill prior to purchase. ("Alexa ask Best Buy about how to link my account" for more info.)

Then, say "Alexa ask Best Buy about Deals"

How did you guys get the free store pickup? It did not offer me this, and it wanted to charge another $5 to ship.
When I ordered mine, Alexa said "This item is in stock at 3 Best Buys near you. Would you like to pick it up?"

Oddly enough, although it was supposedly in stock, I was subsequently told it wouldn't be available for pick up until Sunday. I'm not in a rush, but I've never had that happen over an in stock item.

I can't believe the way people spend money on silly things, but they refuse to give $1.99 to a developer who has made a perfect app to fit a niche. An app that would be used on a daily basis for years. $1.99
Because there are better alternative smart plugs that already support that feature from their app. The Amazon plugs are overpriced.

15A smart plug from amazon that will NEVER lose service for $4.99 and you claim there are cheaper alternatives? lol

I'm guessing you never owned Insignia plugs.

Yes. And they're not fat like Amazon's plug. I own several. The alternative use "Smart Life" app

You're completely missing the point. From Lutron to TP-Link to WeMo and more, they'll duck out of the smarthome biz in a heartbeat -- some already have. Got X10? The bigger lesson here is that Wi-Fi smarthome devices are dumb: everyone knows that Z-Wave (or Zigbee if necessary) is the way to go. Lower power consumption, more range b/c it's mesh, no 2.4 GHz congestion, etc.

I decided to get one of these. I got one a year or two ago at the 99c price but the code refused to work this time for myself or anyone who I asked to try it.

It was frustrating ordering at first as right at the end of the order, Alexa said having trouble but it eventually worked trying again. It's frustrating to order via Voice as long process and no way to say use gift cards, rewards certificates, etc.

I debated the Merkury Innovations one at Walmart at first because I figured try it at $8.88 but I squashed that idea at getting an "official" one for only $5. The Walmart one is 2.4GHZ only. I did end up getting their 75W color LED though to mess around with.
