Yes, for the price.

If I build this on my own
1. i5-10400F - $179.99
2. 16gb DDR4 2666 - $49.99
3. 512gb nvme - $54.99
4. Powercolor Radeon 5700 XT - $389.99
5. Motherboard, WiFi card ~ $120
6. Case ~ $60
7. Windows 10 - $99
8. Keyboard, mouse - $50
Total: 1004.95

Good for the price. He should be able to play all games. Just not on max graphics(some games)

This is in fact a VERY good gaming PC for the price, he should be able to play 1440p games on medium to high settings. It's a good deal, your son will love it

Spec-wise, this is a good gaming-oriented system. However, the downsides to this machine are common to nearly all pre-built PCs from Dell/HP/Lenovo: Proprietary hardware may be difficult to upgrade/replace, locked down BIOS, questionable product support in the future, etc.

One other thing that others may not have mentioned is that your teen (depending on his level of tech-savviness or pickiness) might not love having a Dell if his friends have custom-built machines with RGB lighting, etc. Let's face it, this machine has just about zero sex appeal.

That might not matter since the price is right. I build a lot of systems and I have hit this price point using similar hardware, but it's difficult to do so without cutting corners.

This is a great PC for a teen to play games and do work. The only thing you will probably need to add down the line is more storage, 1tb of storage will be plenty to start and make sure it’s a solid state drive in m.2 form would be preferred. If this sounds complicated by the time your son needs it he will probably know how to do it since there are plenty of video instructions on YouTube and teens learn fast.

No, 6C/12T should be good for years. It should also upgradable to a high end 10900K 10C/20T, or 11900K 8C/16T, when you need it down the road.

It's similar to that one but much less expensive. He's right that a downside is that this is single-channel memory (should be dual-channel, but Dell chose to use a single memory module), and that it uses proprietary parts and form factor as well as an interesting 12v-only power supply.

It's faster than the 2060 and 2070. In some titles even faster than 2070 Super.

We should make 1 thing clear though... dell overseas selling team is quite different than actually buying this system for $850. not only will you never get that price by calling, but you are also not being pushed to buy anything on which dell is making max $, which includes selling team's commission (I personally don't care if you buy this deal or not and/or any other deals I post).

Dell is a scummy company. Linus Tech Tips documented their awful customer care/service in a multipart video. I'm not telling anyone how to spend their hard earned money, but this information is out there, so use your own judgement.

Fantastic deal, on par with the great all-AMD BFCM Cyberpowerpc deals for $1k. If I didn't get one of those, I'd be all over this.

CPU comparison with Ryzen 7 3800X, they're neck in neck:

Linus is a sellout
Sellout or not he perfectly shows how terrible Dell is as a company and I personally prefer to build my own computers but I will be putting the word out there to warn others to stay away from Dell.

I totally hear this. That said, if you know how to work the dell ecosystem you can get some great reliable products at reasonable prices. At least this has been my experience after all these years. It's definitely not for those who need hand holding or want full serivce customer experiences, and you need patience and understanding when dealing with support reps.

How does RX 5700 XT compare wiith 2060/2070/2080?
User Benchmark is a pretty quick and easy way to compare cards. I built a system with a 5700 xt shortly after launch and it has had it's ups and downs.

Here is a comparison between the 5700 xt and the 2070:
https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Com...4045vs4029

In my opinion here are pros and cons.
Pros:
  • It's comparable to a RTX 2070 in raw power
  • It costs less then the comparable 2070 NVIDIA cards
Cons:
  • Initial driver bugs were frustrating causing bad initial reception, mostly everything is sorted out now, but hard to forgive from many people
  • Drivers had to actually slow it down to keep it from overheating itself, so it is a more stable but slower card now
  • No ray-tracing
If I had to do it all over again, I think the NVIDIA is a better card, I want to like my setup and be happy with it, but the initial difficulties of the card and getting the drivers right are hard to forget.
