This is not a good deal. Amazon raised the original price of the Samsung 1TB SSD to 200 dollars and then slapped a 50% off which makes it essentially cost the same as it was previously at normal price. Also, seem strange that the 2TB cost 203 dollars the original price and only has a 3% discount.

This doesn't seem accurate. Camel shows the price has been above $110 for 365 days prior, the median price for most of 2020 was likely around $140, $130. So this is 30%+ off still, record lowest price on Camel, by over $10.

$100.00 for this particular drive is SOP now. Best Buy, B&H, Samsung direct (just to name a few) are all $100.00 now. It was actually this same price last year.
Then it increased for a period of time.
That $200.00 regular price at Amazon is overinflated (not unique for Amazon to do this).
In case anyone is interested, the Crucial MX-500, 1TB is $95.00 currently at B&H.
The 2TB version is $190.00.
The overall concensus is that this and the Samsung 860 EVO are the "gold standard" SSD's.

Yeah they used some shady tactics to make this seem like a better deal than it is, but this is the new good price for these drives, it is not a bad deal it is just the new average now. A month or 2 ago this was always over 100, so this is a good price to buy it at

Do better work and use the Camel.

Yes, across the board and aggregating overall review data, Samsung rules the SSD market*. Other SSD's may show a little better performance on some specific tasks, but Samsung overall is the best. It's all I use Wink

*However, you do pay for it - their SSD's are typically higher priced than alternatives.

This is still a pretty good deal for a 1TB Samsung TLC drive. Avoid QLC.

Maybe a dumb question... but can I pop this into a 2.5 sata enclosure i have from like 10 years ago and treat it as an external SSD?

Edit: for what it's worth, I'm looking for size and reliability, not necessarily speed - just to backup family photos.

Not a dumb question!.....
It shouldn't be a problem, assuming that there's no compatibility issue with the chipset in your enclosure (since you mentioned that it's 10 years old).
The (minimal) power requirements of this SSD should be compatible with most USB ports.
If you encounter a problem with your older enclosure, you could replace it at minimal cost ($10-15.00). You may even want to consider a more up-to-date enclosure from the outset.
