One of the few games that your kids can actually beat you at fair and square and also where a player can come back from being in last place.

I got the dark edition which I guess has rules for 2 people. And like others have said it is not very fun with 2 people. Dark edition components are pretty leet though. Also it isn't as "serious" for the mechanic as some of the other games you might play. It would be better suited for like a "Family" vs a serious board game night (Scythe/Wingspan).
I hope it is a better game for 3+ then since i have it and giving to my family as a valentines present. I already have KoT + the powerup expansion. The Dark Edition was on sale for $30 at the time, but now it is back up to $40.

Great game, but according to the camels 3, the price is only just now coming back down to normal levels after spiking at the beginning of December. Also, there is a limited run of the Dark Edition that was briefly on sale for around the same price. https://slickdeals.net/f/14691686-tokyo-dark-edition-limited-edition-29-99
Yeah, this isn't a steal, but it's essentially the best price it's been on Amazon for 2 years.
But since it is still $5 cheaper than www.gamenerdz.com [gamenerdz.com] (which is out of stock), I thought it was worth posting still. Smilie

This game is a gateway game. Next thing you know you will get the power up expansion. When that is not enough you will get Catan and pandemic until you spend $150 for Gloomhaven.

This is a great game.
I agree with everything except that they'll get Catan. There's no reason for new people entering the hobby to pick up Catan in 2021. It's a fine game, but its gameplay, artwork, theme, and components are all very dated. I'd point people to Azul, Wingspan, or pretty much anything designed by Phil Walker Harding instead (Barenpark).

Agreed though, this is a great game.

We went straight from Mysterium, to Eldritch Horror, to Gloomhaven (on sale - thanks, SD!), although we just got HEAVILY into tabletop toward the end of 2019, so COVID has hit us hard as group gaming goes.

That said, my wife plays 2p games with me and my friends and I play on Tabletop Simulator, but you're not kidding about the "one game leads to another", lol.

This is a fantastic game. This original version is the best. The power up expansion adds unecessary complexity, as this is a game for all comers (friends or family visiting, etc). It is easy to explain, and the game mechanic is extremely well thought out (from the guy who invented Magic: The Gathering).

Almost every game "expansion" I've ever played is garbage and not worth it, with few exceptions. Catan Seafarers is amazing. Catan Cities & Knights is OK but it leads to a lot of fighting and destroyed friendships. Queendomino is a true improvement of Kingdomino, but I still enjoy the original with new players. Codenames original is still the best. Every spin-off version is a trashy cash grab.

Always, always, always ask yourself if the expansion has ever really added any value to the game you are playing, and if the fun has truly increased, or just the complexity. A game needs to get onto the table and not take many play-throughs to learn for new comers.

Not necessary, but I enjoyed the power-up expansion addition of the panda, and something to go for on the 3x heart roll. I bought this early on, and totally covet the space penguin, which was originally an event exclusive character. I probably won't rebuy this just for him.

Ticket to Ride, US version's 1910 expansion is great. You should probably call is more of a version 2 than an expansion though. The larger cards make for easier handling, and the trip cards got reblanced so as to not to auto-win by building coast to coast trips.

Bang!'s expansions are also fun, to insert some randomness into the card hoarder games I've played.

Exactly this...splendor was my gateway board game.

This is much better with 3 or more ppl. I don't find it as fun with 2ppl
Splendor was my gateway game too. A friend gave it to me for my birthday, and my thought was "Really? Who plays board games these days?' About a week later, I brought it out and played a couple of games with my wife. The face to face interaction without electronic distractions hooked me. I picked up a couple more games (Castle Panic, TIcket to Ride, Century Golem Edition) and then Barnes and Noble had a 80% off clearance. Three years later, I have about 150 board games, and the family plays a couple of times per week. Good times!
