I have owned the JBL Link View, the JBL Link 300 (speaker), the Lenovo 8" Smart Display, Google Home, and Google Nest Hub.
Out of all of the Google Assistant displays, the JBL has the best sound quality, hands down. With the small subwoofer, it generates more bass than any other Google smart display.
If you want the display more for the digital photo aspect first and the sound second, I recommend the Google Nest Hub. Google did an amazing job with their adaptive displays and they easily beat out the glossy, computer screen look of the Lenovo and JBL displays. They can also be found for around half this price (on sale).
The Lenovo is still noteworthy and isn't bad at all. The speaker may even be better than the Google Nest Hub.
All of that being said, if you are only looking for a Google Assistant device and a good sounding speaker, the JBL Link 300 is an awesome option. It brings a significant amount of bass and produces clean sound even at high volumes. I have not noticed any difference in it's Google Assistant experience in comparison to any of my other Google branded Google Assistant devices. You can find them open-box or refurb on eBay for probably half this price and get two for what you would pay for one of these JBL displays. Two Link 300s would give you a formidable sounding speaker setup.
It is really all personal preference amongst these selections for Google Assistant devices. What you are looking for and how you listen to your media content can help dictate if you need/want a device with a screen or if you could save money on just a smart speaker

How do you get to watch YouTube TV on this JBL?
You have to subscribe to YouTube TV obviously but you just say "OK Google, play NBC (or whatever station you want to watch) on YouTube TV." Or you can cast from your phone.

Yes, I also use it in the kitchen. But mine does not always reconnect after the reboot. So I have to wait until it decides itself to reconnect to wif-fi. There is no other way (to turn on wi-fi) to force reconnect. Yes, sound is very good but I do not need a massive sound in my kitchen. Plus I have massive dedicated sound-systems in the house (and multiple great speakers). The point is while the product is good, the price is not....specially in 2021.
I have this and one of the new Nest Audios. I'm not a full blown audiophile but to me the JBL sounds better and at this price is $14 cheaper than the Nest, which doesn't have the added utility of a screen. So even if you're using it exclusively as a speaker the price is pretty good.

should not be more than $50 at this time. I have one. tends to loose wi-fi connection occasionally (even when google/nest hub stay connected), but otherwise it is good. Good sound and everything. No matter how good it is, the price can not be more than $50 now since the price of google hub is now reduced significantly. This price was good/excellent 1-2 years back. Btw, I would suggest not to buy lenovo display, it has significant wi-fi issue (at least with mine), lost connection frequently even it is next to my router.

Sounds like you have a wifi issue, not an issue with these devices.

This should be compared to the amazon echo show 8 rather than the google nest hub. It has the same 8" 1280x800 resolution screen and dual 2" speakers of the echo device, leaving the smaller lower resolution screen and lower performance speakers of the nest hub in a different class from the echo and JBL. It's a tradeoff and personal preference, but in my opinion the echo shows $20 cheaper price and Netflix capability outweigh the JBLs bass quality advantage. If they get netflix capability it would be worth the extra $20 for better bass than the echo IMO.

I agree with everything this guys says. I strangely enough have all 4 of the devices he describes above. The Link 300 is a great speaker. You can sometimes find refurbs on ebay in the $30-$40 range. Screen on JBL view is meh but sound is good. it makes a very good stand alone roon endpoint for the kitchen.

I have this ... good sound. Haven't had much use for the display. There's no way to access a web browser with this unit, correct? Or to stream TV, say from an HDHomerun?

you can chrome cast your phone's display, that's the closest to web browsing you're gonna get.

I bought this for Christmas and I'm disappointed as it doesn't seem to always pick up my voice correctly I Google home hub does a much better job in my opinion maybe the sound is a bit better on this but sometimes the functionality is completely broken I ask it to do something and it says it's doing it but then it just shows the next photo and my photo slide.

Thanks. Kind of figured it wasn't really possible.

This is an ok deal at this price. Yes it probably "sounds" better than competing units , but physics limits how "good" something can sound in such a small form factor.(Yes science is back in vogue now).

A concern I have is firmware support on these 2nd party orphan devices. They are not running Google Home on google hardware,,,they are running a Home license on JBL or Lenovo hardware - JBL and Lenovo are responsible for updates, not Google.

Question: We're looking for a device to display a Google Calendar in our kitchen so we can use it for chores and Dr appts. Is this a good device for that, or are there other better things out there?

Google version of this (with screen) was sold $45 or LESS many times in the past (and during thanksgiving sale). So the difference could be $14 "now", but it is not the real difference in price that people paid.

I lost the actual count of smart devices that I have connected so far! Among the screen-devices, definitely 3 echo shows, 2 google hub, 1 lenovo and 1 this JBL. Except this JBL (and the lenovo), other amazon/google devices always stayed connected in last couple of years that I can remember. So, sorry.....it is not my wi-fi issue!
