Credit Karma Tax—is it really free?
Yes! Credit Karma Tax is always 100% free. It's $0 to file both state and federal tax returns. Even if you're taking deductions or credits, it won't cost you a penny, ever.
Free Tax USA is also another free federal tax software
What did the pro do that TurboTax didnt account for?
Capital gains/losses, amortisation schedule etc. that you have to calculate over the years you owned a rental property when you are selling it. It's quite complicated to do on your own, unless you are a tax accountant yourself. Lots of grey areas where you can potentially save (or get penalized by IRS) for...
Anyone have feedback between hr block and turbo tax?
Also the hr block says 1 state program included but 20$ to e-file, what's the program for then?
Turbo Tax is more user friendly, H&R Block is cheaper.
Last year I used H&R Block Premium Business because it was $70 cheaper than Turbo Tax Business which I had been using for a decade. It had a bit of a learning curve but worked fine. It also has the individual filing + state so I ran it too. I have already both Turbo Tax Deluxe so I was able to compare. Again Turbo Tax was easier but the results were the same.
I've used HR Block for years and like them more than TurboTax. Especially after what TurboTax did to trick people into paying money for their free service.
You don't get a state e-file for free, but it processes your taxes for one state included. You can print out the filled out forms for free and mail it to the state. That's what I end up doing.
H&R block is guilty of the same practices regarding their "free file" service. Neither service is squeaky clean when it comes to making it easy to file for free to those who are eligible. https://topclassactions.com/lawsu...on-hidden/
The one time that I tried H&R block, I got a surprise. I could have sworn that finished my tax and PAID!! Next thing I knew, I was told I was late on my tax and fined!!
Had a similar experience and upon calling up the IRS was informed that they had my payment, could see it was paid on time, etc. but it was "not attached to my account" because apparently that tricky maneuver requires two separate departments. One dude even had the audacity to tell me there was nothing he could do about the late fee. So I just paid it. Three weeks later, voila: check in the mail from the IRS for the amount of the late fee.
It's not always user error on filer's side of the equation.

I think it comes down to the person. I dont think you need to be a tax accountant at all. That's the purpose of the software.
If you are willing to do some research and to reach out to HRblock support team, I think it's fine to use the software to cover capital gains from a sale.
I used them to file taxes for my business for 2018. It took me quite long since it was my first time, but I did a lot of chatting with customer service and got it done confidently.
2019 business went much more smoothly.
I had to google what qualifies as what type of expense and stuff like that, but it was doable.
I assume same would apply to a rental property ( what falls under maintenance vs utilities vs something else)
Might be dumb question but is the Microsoft Office here a one time purchase? Or is this a yearly subscription model like Office 365? Need Excel and Word but don't wanna pay yearly.

One time purchase. This is a pretty good deal, if you are also needing tax software.

this version is a one time purchase thats valid for life basically.. obviously you wont get the new update that 365 gives you since that is a subscription
