For places that's are "legal", these work great to start them.

Apparently the LED lights on these things only last about 3-5 years and they don't even sell replacement parts. So after the 1year warranty you will have a dead plastic bowl.

I wonder if there are any kind of work around for this, or this is essentially just gonna be a overpriced dead bowl in 3-5 years time?

I mean, 80 bucks is a lot, no matter for basil or cilantro, plus electricity. Maybe getting some fresh is better for me or just plant some in my backyard. Otherwise it doesn't make sense to pay 80 bucks for just 2 pods of basil...
You don't come out ahead very quickly, but you do eventually. I've 100% received far far far more than 80 bucks worth of basil over the last 3+ years. How much does it costs you to go to the store and throw out half the basil two days later? I do like basil a lot.
I will admit that I paid far less for my refurb aerogarden and that it's probably not for people that don't enjoy eating fresh herbs and taking care of plants. The cheapest method would be to just grow basil outdoors but that's more work and basil always wants to bolt and flower after a warm week, not to mention that it dies outside in January for a lot of the US.

The algae won't necessarily harm the plant. Overwatering it will, however, cause the roots to rot. You were fu*king with it too much. Plant the seed, water it when necessary, ignore the roots. If you have ever done a kratky setup in a mason jar, the jar will be entirely green by the plants adult stage but it doesn't matter by then because you should have harvested it.
I'm not sure that you can overwater a hydroponic setup... Lol.

Imo, this is not a great deal. Wait until it goes on sale + kohl's cash + % coupon and you will save more. I got this one in green last week for $40 when it was on sale for $99.99 + kohl's cash + 15% + free shipping.

I haven't tried completely filling it up myself, but you are supposed to leave a bit of headroom so plants can form air roots and get proper oxygen. Of course, if you're doing DWC that doesn't matter too much since the water will be oxygenated.

There are much cheaper versions on Amazon even to the sales price. Is aero garden quality particularly much better?

A capful of h2o2 in the water, and block all the openings that you can.
For "mold" issues ~Those grow pods (on re order ) are usually that culprit. Avoid a "bad" batch by freezing 48 hrs prior; (why gardeners over "winter" new mixed soil) ~freeze & Totally thaw then use.
It works (unless) bad seeds or water are the issue

The light is really bright too. Stupid plants
I've wrapped mine in a Mylar space blanket. Cuts down on the light brightness outside of the unit about 90% and increases the brightness on the plants considerably. Win, win. Just got to watch out for heat.
