In the interest of not misleading anyone, I'm updating the title, product and the store. The original post is at the bottom. Note the first few comments were with regard to that model only.

There is now a newer model, available for pre-order on B&H for $900 (free shipping):

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr...9YQAvD_BwE

The newer one seems brighter (3200 vs 2200), has a low input lag of 5 ms, and high refresh rate of 240Hz (under 1080p) so it should be good for gamers. Now it is believed 701 has RGBW color wheel while the 728 has RGBRGB (so more accurate color but less bright).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This was my original post:

I wish I didn't get a used Epson (2150) just a couple of days ago. Even a decent entry level 4K projector new would still be worth the extra $400 I would have had to pay over an excellent 1080p one which 2150 is.

https://www.adorama.com/vspx7274k...=adl-gbase

At that price, it's obviously a pixel shifted 4K (or really UHD) projector. Have to make this disclaimer so people don't come in with their real 4k vs faux 4k and UHD vs 4K arguments ;-).

P.S.: this is currently on back order so don't buy it if your Super Bowl party depends on it ;-).

UPDATE: I now do not recommend this projector unless you get a price. Please see below discussions about the newer models.

This is from Amazon's Q&A session on px701-4k:

"Im looking to buy a couple pairs of 3d glasses for this projector but im not sure which ones to get. Does anyone know?
Answer:The PX701-4K projector can be used with any Active 3D DLP projector glasses.
By ViewSonic Corporation MANUFACTURER on December 11, 2020
I've been told by the manufacturer that the PX701-4k will not have 3D but that the 728 and 748 will.
By Bearclaw on January 14, 2021"

So the conflicting information abound. I got my information from the Chinese website jd.com where px701-4k has been on sale for about 2 months now (roughly around $860):

https://item.jd.com/100015660576.html

Perhaps you can try google-translate. They have a lot of reviews, just like Amazon. Mostly good. But most don't have other 4k projectors to compare against and are easily wowed by their first 4k projector. One reviewer did say he compared 701 with both 727 and 747 before deciding on 701.

In any case, I have a feeling/hope that the US shipment probably will have the 3D firmware in them.
Just ordered one from Amazon last night. Scheduled delivery tomorrow. They are releasing couple at a time with delivery in couple of days.

Good to know. Definitely let us know how you feel about it.

These are some of the things jd.com users complain about: 1) color transition not smooth; 2) color not accurate enough; 3) some 4K material not being played at 4k. Obviously, a lot of these are fairly subjective. But I would be mostly interested in seeing how "lively" colors are and how contrast/brightness/color accuracy balance out.

Update: to further muddle up the water, here is a quote from avsforum (https://www.avsforum.com/threads/...3/page-6):

--------------------------------------------------------
Ok lets see if we can get all these wrapped up for you here.. In regards to the color gamut, all of the projectors are rated for 96% rec709 the 748-4K also support rec2020). Now for the color wheels, the 701-4K has the RGBW color wheel in it, which gives it a little less accurate color compared to an RGBRGB wheel, but is a bit brighter on the upside. The 728-4K does have the RGBRGB color wheel in it, and the 748 does as well. The 728/748 haven't been released yet so we don't have too much on the specs yet, those should be released once we get closer to their arrival. Now for the 3D capability, I have confirmed the 701-4K does NOT support 3D video, we are actually trying to get that corrected on Amazon to remove that. Both the 728 and 748-4k models will in fact support 3D. I hope that helps, if you need any further information just let us know and we'll be more than happy to help!

Sincerely,
Chris

I believe px727-4k has RGBRGB and 747 has RGBW color wheels (while px701-hd has RGBCMY. I read somewhere px701-4k is just a px701-hd with the new TI chip). I now wonder what's the difference between 728 and 748...

Any idea when 728 and 748 will be released? I can certainly spend more for 3D, color accuracy (RGBRGB). If they keep the prices close to 727 and 747 costs, then I think we have a winner

Here is the comparison for PX747 and PX727. The only difference is the color wheel. One has RGBW and another one has RGBRGB. Obviously, the RGBW will have higher lumens due to white color wheel.

Called the Viewsonic Sales Team line. There won't be 3D for PX701. And the 728 and 748 will have 3D and ETA for them somewhere in April/May timeframe. The prices are going to be similar at approximately $1299.

The only information I can find online regarding 728 and 748 is from Viewsonic's Russian site (using google translation):

-----------------------------------
Product: ViewSonic PX728-4K
Highlights: Projector for home 2000 ANSI lumen | 4K-UHD 3840x2160 | 12000:1 | 240W

Product: ViewSonic PX748-4K
Highlights: Projector for home 4000 ANSI lumen | 4K-UHD 3840x2160 | 12000:1 | 240W
-----------------------------------

but with no release date information.

Now assuming 748 has 4000 ANSI lumen, I then doubt it would have RGBRGB color wheel as alluded to by some Vewsonic sales support person quoted in my previous post. So the plot thickens. Perhaps he forgot a W, meaning it's RGBRGBW.

Also we know that px727-4k has 2200 ANSI lumens, it would seem illogical to have a updated version with only 2000 lumens. Sorry folks, this is getting crazy and out of hand ;-).

This is from Australia - https://www.justprojectors.com.au...748-4k.htm:

Quick Facts:
Viewsonic PX748-4K
SPECIFICATIONS
Native Resolution: UHD 3840 x 2160 16:9
Brightness: 4000 ANSI Lumens
Maximum Contrast: 15,000:1
Weight: 4.2kg
Fan Noise: 33 / 29db (eco)
Warranty: 3 Years (+1 Year $135)
Lamp Warranty: 12 Months / 1000 Hours
Lamp Life Up To: 15,000hrs
FEATURES
- Rec. 709 Colour Calibration
- 4 Segment Colour Wheel
- 1.2x Zoom
- Vertical Keystone Correction
- 2x HDMI connections
- HDR Compatible
- 12 Volt Trigger

So it is RGBW as expected.

Comparing with px701-4k, the higher lumen comes from a higher powered lamp (but shorter lamp life), a bit better optical zoom (1.2 vs 1.1) and contrast (15000:1 vs 12000:1). It didn't mention 3D, but I fully expect it to be there (I still think px701-4k could have 3D from technical point of view. But marketing is another story).

This is px728-4k specs from Vietnam - https://hdradio.vn/may-chieu-view...28-4k.html (google translated):

Viewsonic PX728-4K Projector Specifications
Model: PX728-4K
Type: 4K Projector
Maximum resolution: 3840x2160
Supported resolution:VGA (640 x 480) to 4K (3840 x 2160)
Color Optimization: Rec.709
Picture size:30"-300"
Light source:Lamp
Light source power:240 watts
Optical brightness:2000 ANSI Lumens
Life light source: 4000
Life Light Source in Eco Mode:20,000 Hours
Projector contrast:12,000: 1
Throw rate (in meters):1.13-1.47
Projection difference: 120% + / - 6%
Keystone distortion:H: +/- 40 °, V: +/- 40 °
I hearable noise (Standard):32 dB
I hearable noise (Eco Mode):27 dB
Input latency:5 milliseconds
Lens properties:F = 1.94-2.12, f = 12-15.6 mm
Optical zoom:1.3x
Digital Zoom:0.8x-2.0x

It did not mention contrast ratio and the lumen number is lower than px727-4k's. The optical zoom is 1.3x instead of 1.2x on px748-4k. All these indicate to me that the specs are highly likely early development specs. But this is the only one I can find right now.

I got this delivered yesterday. First opinion. It is small and great piece. 4k Picture quality is awesome.

4k content is awesome on screen
Colors are great
Colors are not faded in high lumens like 747
Bright and clear
Blacks are fine.
Keystone setting are good. It did not effect picture.
No rainbow effect after 2 hrs watching. 747 suffered on this.

I am not a gamer. So I cannot talk about the refresh rate 240hz.5ms. lag etc.

I had 1080p and recently I have been feeling lost when 4k content pop-up on Netflix and Prime. After seeing quality on the screen with this projector, I felt it is really worth spending extra 400$ compared to Epson 3ccd 1080p.

HDR is good. It right away picked up HDR content. Make sure you have 4k AV receiver with Firestick 4k which can deliver 4k content. Also supported HDMI cables. My old cables were not delivering proper output when I first installed this projector. I was upset with quality on the scree. I barrowed my friend cables ,4k stick and I was blown away by the quality.

If you are having just 1080p content and long way for 4k then stay with Epson model. 1080p did not look that great on this projector.

Finally HDR, 4k , Easy of use, 3200 lumens, Prize , Size, quality , I am impressed.

if you are gamer and existing 4k projector owner then better you consider some expert opinion on this.
I do not use 3d content much and I did not see any 4k projector which can offer 3d under 900. Also many mentioned in other forums that this is 3d capable but Viewsonic is disabling to push higher end model for marketing purposes.

How have you connected this projector to the sound systems? Is "wired" the only option? What soundbar or AVR or surround system are you using?
Want to know the overall video+audio experience?

I do not think we have any 4k projector with ARC. You need 4k receiver which can output 4k content. Otherwise you will need audio extractor with 4k to output video to projector and audio to your old Av receiver.

I am using audio extractor.

Not sure what you mean by the audio extractor. You basically connect the other end of the HDMI cable to AV receiver/soundbar. Most of the AV receivers are since 2014 support 4k video with 60 Hz (HDMI 2.0 spec). For example, your video source is a media player (Fire TV 4k, roku, google chromecast, appple tv), connect the player HDMI to AV receiver input. Connect another HDMI cable (output) from AV receiver to projector. This gives full 4k support for video. Hope that helps

You are correct. Some of the receivers even though they support 4k passthrough , they might be on old HDMI specs to not support Dolby Atmos etc.. To get the latest technology you need to have latest Receiver with all available options. I have 7.2 Receiver from 2015 with 4k but it is not giving me all 4k pass through. Firestick was complaining. So I had to go for audio extractor which cost 40 bugs on Amazon. The audio extraction sit in between projector and receiver and split the video and audio signal. This is workaround for using old receiver and saving another 500$ on receiver.

Smart soluion. can you please send the link for this device (audio extractor)? Does it gives full Dolby surround let's say if the source video material is mastered in Dolby Atmos?

Hope this helps. Try to research more. If these things does not work latest 4k receiver is best bet. Mine old onkyo receiver sounds so good and recently they replaced under warrenty. So could not replace with another one.
