What would be the best option for photographing star alignments or such?
What do you mean by "star alignments"? Constellations? Planetary conjunctions?

600mm is great for wildlife and in particular bird photography. I'm not sure of any other use that's worth that amount of money.

25% off on A7 III? That is a steal!
Little better indication that the highly rumored A7 IV is about to release. And it should be a substantial upgrade.

In their most recent release, the A7S III, Sony finally revamped their much criticized user interface. The A7S III has modern touchscreen interface with logically arranged selections and extensive customization options. It is expected to be the user interface for all of their full frame cameras going forward. They've also made large improvements to the view finder and sensor.

I just tried to reproduce and the price with coupon I got was $1978 unfortunately. I was using a teacher discount code, not a student discount code - not sure if that makes a difference.

I did not see the B&H match the above prices with the EDU discount. Prefer to buy from them as you mentioned with the Payboo card.

Wouldn't low light not be as much of an issue if I'm doing long exposure?
The problem with long exposures on stars without a tracker, is that the earth is rotating, so you will get the wipe effect. Probably city lights / ambient light is more of an issue. If you have a super dark sky, you do not need extra long exposures.

If you go to utube and search sony astro photography, you can find lots of good tips on the topic of shooting near (planets/moon) and far objects (stars).

As before, the overpriced a7S III by greedy Sony will more obviously be a rip-off when the a7 IV comes to market. 99% of its customers have no need/no clue as to the feature distinctions.

The A7 IV won't include most of the top line video features of the A7S III.

The IV will be better for picture takers, but far worse for videographers.

Different products for different purposes.

NOPE. History proves you wrong and some specs have already begun to leak: 10-bit 4:2:2 4K/60, etc. Again, the suckers go for the a7S latest, then the smarties clean up with the a7 latest.

It was not a spec leak.

It was a vlogger's "wish list".

And like most wish lists, it was entirely unrealistic. Sony is not about to undercut their $3,500 A7S III only a month after it's become commonly available.

This isn't just for marketing reasons, it's largely for technical reasons. There is only one reason that the A7S III is the only full frame, full readout, fanless camera on the market that is able to record 4K 10 bit video without overheating. That is because the A7S III is the only full frame camera with a native 4K sensor.

All of the others overheat, pixel bin, line skip, or have loud fans. They do this, because resampling 6K or 8K down to 4k requires tremendous processing power, and those processors produce tremendous heat.

TLDR - Sony couldn't make at 24mp or 30mp A7 IV do what the A7S III can do, even if they wanted to. The IV will be technically, physically incapable.

I was hoping they would put the a7siii back on their edu discount list.
When did Sony put a7s3 on edu list and how long did it stay there? I thought it's only commonly available recently. So I am surprised that it has already been on the edu list.

It was on the list for a couple days when it was just released.
