(Smartphones have smaller GPS antennas that can take longer to attain a lock; normally the reason they lock much faster is because they get Assisted GPS information via the cellular network, which doesn't help if you're not in cellular service.)
Many GPS apps incl. Google Maps will only offline select regions, which can leave you with your pants down if you don't offline the area in advance. (Again, exceptions apply; HERE WeGo allows you to offline the entirety of the US (with some other countries as part of the North American package).
These devices still have their place, even if smartphone navigation has advantages in everyday use.

been a while since i updated mine, but usually it was twice a year. april and october or something?
With 5g matured, years from now, you'll have 1 device as hotspot and can cancel internet to home, reduce cable channel cost.(whatever you do find buy from big tech, Google/Facebook /YouTube/Amazon/Microsoft etc.)
Look for the little guy to buy from, else soon you'll only have 1-2 choices
This unit also has built in WiFi so theoretically you don't even have to hook it up to your computer anymore.

Years ago I had one of these dedicated units with lifetime traffic -- until I got my iPhone. Especially with offline Google maps on phones, these dedicated units are now obsolete and somewhat of a target for those wanting to smash & grab.
